5x Points on flights for Amex Platinum: That’s it?
PLLLLLLLEASE tell me this isn’t it?!?! I’ve been on a Tier One, baller card, huge sign up bonus, tons of bonus categories, $0.02 amex travel redemption value fantasy kick all week. I posted the trademark registration for Tier One and a couple Rumors of something big being released on October 5th. Well, it’s October 5th and all we got is 5x points on flights for Amex Platinum. And it doesn’t even include the BUSINESS PLATINUM?! Biz Plat got 50% on purchases over $5k.
5x Points on Flights for Amex Platinum starting October 6th
Amex Business Platinum cardholders will get a 50% bonus on purchases over $5000
For business with large purchases this is going to be very lucrative and is a nice nod, but it’s sort of surprising that they didn’t extend the 5x points to the business platinum card as well. If they were worried about businesses racking up huge totals they could have capped the 5x earning at a certain level. Seems odd that they wouldn’t make all their platinum card equal on earning.
Amex Business Platinum cardholders also get 50% points back when redeeming points for flight with Amex travel in first/business & with their selected airline.
So if you use the normal $0.01 redemption for a $1000 first class flight it would charge you 100,000 points. You’d then get 50,000 redeposited into your account.
This is actually a pretty fair deal. Not sure why they didn’t just make it a $0.02 redemption rather than have to have double the points necessary for the flight to book it, but alas, it is what it is. It would be a lot nicer if it were on any airline, in any class of service, but it’s a good step. It’s actually a better return than the 0.015 per point that Reserve offers or the 0.016 that Prestige offers with American. It also makes choosing your airline even more important.
Is this it?
If this is the response to Prestige and Reserve I have a feeling that Amex is going to be underwhelmed with the results from it’s customers. While I was ready to sharpen the pen for a new sign up ( and even push my 5/24 number higher) if it was an outstanding offer…this doesn’t persuade me to do much of anything. I hold a Biz Plat and could sign up for a number of personal Amex Plats…MB, Charles Schwab, Ameriprise I won’t be running to do that any time soon.
