Get SPG Platinum with just 9 stays

I’m back with the transitive property of BALLERNESS =) This Marriott/Starwood merger is ripe with great opportunities. Most of what I’ve talked about in the past few days is what can be had by already having SPG status. I’ve written about how Amex Plat can get you Marriott Gold, how SPG Plat can get you United Silver, but today I’ll show you how to get SPG Platinum with just 9 stays.

What is the transitive property of ballerness, Miles?

Funny you should ask because it’s one of my favorite properties. It’s essentially like this:

If A = B and B = C then A = C

So how do we use this baller property to our benefit?

Marriott offers a Platinum status challenge.

What is the Marriott Platinum Status challenge?

You can achieve Marriott Rewards Platinum Elite status by completing 9 stays in 90 days. While challenging you do not get temporary status, but you will get status for the rest the challenge year and the following year. If you’d like to challenge you can either call in ( 800 – 468 – 800) or use this link to request a challenge

  • 9 stays in 90 days
  • Can only be done once every 12 months.
    • This is pretty amazing and far more generous than competing brands

It’s worth noting that it is conditional and must be approved. This is to attract current Marriott guests to stay more or lure loyalists of other brands over, so if you have a brand new account and suddenly you challenge for top tier status…you may not get approved.

The challenge also requires STAYS not nights. This is different than how you earn Marriott status otherwise which is based off of nights and not stays. To earn Platinum the good old fashioned way it’ll take 75 nights. PHEW that’s a lotta nights.

Can I challenge for other elite status levels?

Yes you can

  • Gold = 6 stays in 3 months
  • Silver = 3 stays in 3 months

I still don’t get it…explain the how we apply the transitive property of ballerness

We will use this property in the following way:

If I can Status Challenge to Marriott Platinum and Marriott Platinum = SPG Platinum, then I can status challenge to SPG Platinum with Marriott terms.

OR

9 Marriott stays = Marriott Platinum and Marriott Platinum = SPG Platinum then 9 Marriott Stays = SPG Platinum

Also don’t forget that award nights count towards elite status. So you could use points to qualify for status as well: screen-shot-2016-09-25-at-11-08-42-am screen-shot-2016-09-25-at-11-09-57-am

And the chart for point redemptions:screen-shot-2016-09-25-at-11-11-07-am

This means that you could earn Platinum status for as little as 54k Marriott Rewards if redeemed at a PointSavers rate.

If you signed up for either the personal or business Marriott Rewards Premier credit card from Chase you could have 26k points left over

Or you could even transfer SPG points at 1:3 to Marriott and earn Platinum status with just 18k SPG pointsscreen-shot-2016-09-25-at-11-25-04-am

    Relevant terms here:

Thank you for your reply. You are currently a Gold Elite member. Thank you for your valued loyalty and continued patronage.

On behalf of Marriott Rewards Guest Services, please allow me to extend the offer of a Platinum Elite Status challenge. If you accept this offer, your account status would be upgraded to Platinum Elite after the following terms have been met.

In order to achieve this status, you must accumulate nine separate paid stays beginning with the date your account is registered for the offer, through December 31, 2016. This is a one-time offer, and would be effective within three business days of your acceptance of this offer.

A “hotel stay” or “stay” means all consecutive nights a Marriott Rewards member registers and personally pays and stays at any participating hotel. For example, one or multiple consecutive nights stayed in one hotel qualifies as one paid stay.

To be eligible for this offer, each stay would need to be individually booked in the name on your account, you must check into the hotel, and you need to pay the hotel directly for the stay. You are not eligible to earn credit for stays in another name (even that of a friend or family member), stays booked as part of a group or package, or stays booked and paid through a third party.

This information is visible by clicking on the following link for the Marriott Rewards online terms and conditions.

    http://marriott.com/rewards/terms/earning.mi

Incidental credit, redemption stays, timeshare owner stays during a designated owner week, stays in ExecuStay, and stays Marriott Executive Apartment properties do not earn credit toward this offer. Also, Elite nights that appear as non-stay nights in your account do not qualify for this offer.

Please reply to this email if you would like to accept this offer, and I will register your account.

I requested the platinum status match as soon as I saw this post, and this morning somebody got back to me about it. If I agreed to the terms that emailed me it will start immediately and, as you suggested, I have 90 days to stay nine times. However, the email keeps referencing “paid stays.”

How sure are you that cash + points and point stays qualify?

DP: Just matched to Marriott Gold from spg but independently had a few Marriott award stays earlier this year.

    • Miles September 27, 2016

Elijah – Thank you for all of the information. I posted a follow up ( http://monkeymiles.boardingarea.com/update-get-spg-platinum-just-9-days/ ) with details saying that people were having different experiences with the matches. It looks like more and more people are getting the “paid” stay requirement. I would phone into Marriott and ask them if Cash + Points count toward qualification with your challenge as there isn’t enough information right now to say one way or another. Thanks so much for the update tho!

I received Marriott Gold from my SPG status, I then tried to sign up for the Platinum 9 stay challenge and was told that I need to stay 50 nights before I am eligible for the challenge, even though I have Marriott Gold through the status match.

    • Miles September 25, 2016

Hey Alex – thanks for reading and Interesting to know! Would be educational to know if someone had a few nights already logged at Marriott and then independently gone for a match before linking spg and Marriott. Maybe the system is flagging matched accounts as having done a match/challenge in the prior 12 months.

      • Alex September 25, 2016

I’d like to know too. I was ready to be Marriott Platinum!

  • Hari September 25, 2016

Holy crap, I thought it was once every 5 years like it was with most airlines… once a year is -really- generous!

    • Miles September 25, 2016

SPG is once in a lifetime and you can’t do it if you’ve held status in the last 5 years. Thanks Marriott for hooking us up!!!
