Yesterday, Qatar accepted the very first A350-1000 in Toulouse, France. It was a grand media event ( shown below), and during that presser, Qatar’s CEO Akbar Al Baker detailed more information on the airline’s plan to start an Indian carrier. These plans were first hinted at in early 2017, but it was yesterday that he commented on the extent of his plans:

“I will not tell you what types of aeroplanes we will deploy in India, but as you may remember, we said that we will launch an airline in India which will have a fleet of at least 100 aircraft,”

The airline would be set up in conjunction with Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund.

I dont remember him saying anything about India’s sovereign wealth fund, so I wonder where you got that info from…

Sorry about that…Qatar’s sovereign fund, corrected. Thanks!

very vague. and QR is known to take time in execution
it would be great if they start direct flights out of india. but idoubt it. They will mostly use their india ops for domestic only and as feeder to DOH.

direct flights on QR from indian metros to europe and elsewhere will change the game for all the average direct connections there are at present to EU, esp london.
