Aer Lingus joining One World in 2017! YESSSS!

I have to say I’m probably more excited about this than the average person. And probably more excited than the average aviation geek, but I am stoked to hear this. According to an article in USA Today, Aer Lingus joining One World in 2017!

Here’s what Willie Walsh, CEO of Aer Lingus, had to say about Aer Lingus joining One World

Since IAG acquired Aer Lingus it’s been speculated that they would join One World like the other parent company’s subsidiary airlines: BA and Iberia. Well, Willie Walsh gave us some incite on the timing of that:

“We don’t have a specific timeline. We’re working as quickly as we can,” “But these issues aren’t always as simple as they might appear. IT tends to be the issue that drives the timeline on most of this — getting the Aer Lingus systems capable of interacting with the other oneworld carrier systems.”

“I would expect it in 2017, but I don’t have an exact date,”

THAT MEANS!

Some time in 2017, WE CAN USE AA miles on Aer Lingus business class to Europe for 57,500 Miles and hardly any additional fees.

One of the best things about using Dublin as a way into Europe is the absence of ridiculous taxes and fees that the UK adds on to flights. You can get away from them when booking into the U.K., but it’s virtually impossible to find a way around them when leaving. With Aer Lingus…you just don’t have them. That means if you want to go to London and use points, soon you’ll be able to take a quick flight up to Dublin to fly back to the states and avoid all those annoying taxes and fees.  BYAW

What’s Aer Lingus Business Class like? Miles and I wanna fly in the throne seat for sure.

And don’t forget the Boston to Dublin sweet spot with Avios

Even though Aer Lingus is technically still a part of Star Alliance, you can still redeem British Airwyas Avios for Aer Lingus flights.  Since it is a distance based program, Boston and Dublin sit in a great sweet spot. You can fly business for just 37,500 Avios. THAT IS RIDICS!

Aer Lingus is most certainly not in Star. I also think this is a pretty naive post – I think it likely that BA is going to publish EI fares with the same YQs as BA flights. I think most people prefer it now with BA miles and no YQs or high taxes.

Michael – thanks for reading. Only time will tell, but I don’t see a correlation between joining One World and applying YQs – they will or won’t apply them to Aer Lingus fares regardless of them joining the alliance, but at least those with lots of AA miles will have more options into Europe to use their miles, and also to earn miles when flying on Aer Lingus. But I’d agree we all prefer award tickets with no fuel surcharges or taxes
