3 interesting options from American Express
In 2017, we learned that Hilton and Amex would be debuting a completely new slate of credit cards which would revamp their prior relationship. Then in November we were given the details. Since then we’ve seen several cards hit a 100k welcome bonus, but this is the first time we’ve seen that threshold broken. Until June 27th, 2018 Amex will be running a new, and best ever, 125k welcome bonus for their Hilton Honors American Express Business credit card after $5k spend. They’ve also updated and improved some offers of the Ascend and fee free Hilton Honors card. Check out the details

But I don’t have a small business, Miles. You may, and not know it. Keep reading.
Chase is very friendly to entrepreneurs and small business owners. In fact, if you haven’t been in business for long, or you haven’t established yourself with an EIN, you can still apply as a Sole Proprietor ( fill in your SSN ). If you run a small side business (think bloggers, ebay sellers, tutors, consultants, etc) and want a card to segregate your business income from your personal income at tax time…this is a great opportunity to earn a load of points and help yourself out.
Personally, I have two businesses that I run, one has an EIN, and one doesn’t. I still need to keep all of their records separate, and so I have cards for each business.
Miles, does this card count towards my 5/24
American Express Business Cards will affect your credit score, as in they show as a card application, but remember 5/24 is affected by opened accounts. Amex business cards don’t ultimately affect your number of opened accounts, and therefore won’t increase your 5/24 number. Their personal cards do though.
Looking for something personal? The Hilton Honors Ascend has a new 100k welcome offer too.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Ascend, it’s the revamped Hilton Surpass. So if you had that card at some point in your lifetime, you wouldn’t be eligible for the Ascend, but it’s a very solid card if you haven’t. Until 6/27/2018 you can earn the 100k welcome bonus by spending $3k in the first 3 months. Additionally, you’ll receive these ongoing benefits.
- Free weekend night after each card year anniversary
- 12x points at Hilton Hotels
- 6x points at US: Restaurants, Grocery Stores, and Gas Stations
- 3x points everywhere else
- Spend $40k in a year…you’ll receive Hilton Top Tier Diamond status.
- $95 annual fee
Looking for something fee free? There is the Hilton Honors Card offering a 75k welcome bonus after $1k spend in 3 months.
The biggest reason I’d seriously consider this card is Hilton Silver status. While that won’t give you a lot of benefits at check-in, what it will do for you, is qualify you for a 5th night free. Explanation: if you carry Silver or better status with Hilton, you can redeem your points for 5 nights and only pay for 4. That right there, may ultimately save you a ton.
Personally I’d at least go with an Ascend, as it gives you a free anniversary night every year plus the opportunity to hit Diamond status if you’re a big spender. That being said, I certainly have friends that refuse to pay an annual fee.
- 7x Hilton Honors at Hilton Hotels
- 5x Hilton Honors at Restaurants, U.S. Supermarkets, and U.S. Gas stations
- 3x Hilton Honors on all other purchases
- No Foreign transaction fees
- Hilton Silver status
- Spend $20k and get Hilton Honors Gold
- No Annual fee
What are some great uses for these points?
I took my mom on an around the world trip last year, and one of the spots we stopped was Bali. We were able to utilize Hilton’s Cash + Points program to end up in a 1 bedroom Suite at the Conrad Bali. It was epic. But, there are plenty of incredible options around the world. We’ve used points in London at the Conrad as well, but the most important thing you can do is find value. Always check the difference between paying with cash, points + cash, and purely points.
