Chase has had a ton of changes in the past couple of days – from a complete revamp on the Chase Sapphire Reserve® to an unveiling of the Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business(SM). In the midst of all of that news we learned that Chase will be doing away with the fixed redemption levels of 1.25c and 1.5c in Chase Travel®. We also learned that there will be new rules for getting approved for Chase cards that involves eliminating the 48 month Sapphire rule as well as the restrictions around holding both the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Sapphire Reserve concurrently. Let’s dig into these changes
Chase 1.25c and 1.5c redemption levels to be replaced with PointsBoost
Currently, you can redeem your Ultimate Rewards in the Chase Travel portal at the following rates
1.25c
Those who get these cards after 6/23/25 will redeem at 1c across the board or up to 1.5c for select hotels and select flights on select airlines, and up to 1.75c on premium cabin flights with select airlines
1.5c
If you get the CSR on 6/23 or later, these will be able to be redeemed at 1c or up to 2 cents
Existing cardholders will keep their redemption values through 10/26/27
- If you have any of these cards, or you upgrade before 6/23/25 you will keep these redemption values until 10/26/27
Sapphire Family Language ( Holding CSP and CSR concurrently ) and 48 month rule
VFTW asked this question at a Chase presser and these were the responses
Beginning June 23, 2025 you will be able to have both the Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred cards. New account bonus offer eligibility for either card will be based on factors including previously earned bonus offers and the number of cards opened and closed, among others.
We are transitioning away from the family of cards every 48 month eligibility to a same product premium eligibility
Now, this opens the door to holding both cards concurrently, but it doesn’t guarantee you’ll get the bonus. My understanding is that Chase will implement a new piece of tech that will alert you to whether you are eligible when you’re applying, similar to American Express. The quote from Chase says it will notify you if you are “NOT” eligible for a bonus.
Consumers applying through most channels will be notified during the application process if they are not eligible for a bonus offer and given the choice to continue the application or cancel the application with no impact to their credit score.
All of this together? This means you could still add a card without getting a bonus, hold the CSP and CSR at the same time, but I’m not sure why you’d want to do that – wouldn’t it be easier to just upgrade or downgrade if you aren’t going to get a bonus.
I haven’t had a CSR in probably 7 years. I’ll apply and see if they give it to me even though I’m holding a CSP currently. I’m not going to upgrade the card – I want to see what the bonus is, and would rather go for that than guarantee a lower fee for a year and 1.5c until 2027. I’ll easily use up the credits on the new CSR so the fee doesn’t hurt as bad.
Personally, I wouldn’t get my hopes up that this means it’s going to be easier to get multiple bonuses on the same card in a shorter timeframe, but that the timeframe will likely be longer.
6/23/25 – will it be hard to get approved?
I have no idea, but my gut says that Chase will be more lenient in the beginning and tighten up the rules as time goes on. I’d imagine the last thing they want is a bunch of current customers who would like the card applying and getting rejected cause they have a CSP or got a bonus in the last 48 months. Once the fanfare dies down… I’d guess it’ll get quite a bit harder. We saw this with Cap1and the Venture X, and I’d guess we will see it with Chase this go around.
Will you be applying?
