SIXT is one of my favorite rental car companies

My first experience with SIXT was last year when I needed to rent a car for a week. I didn’t need anything fancy and rented a Prius C for roughly $23 a day. What did I get when I arrived? A C-Class Mercedes that would normally cost more than $75 a day. How was I able to land such an amazing upgrade? SIXT Platinum status – which could be yours very easily with World Elite Mastercard. Yep, not any specific card, but a whole slew of cards will give you SIXT Platinum status. In fact, you may already have one. Let’s take a look.

What is SIXT and why do I love it?

Straight from the site:

Sixt rent a car was founded in 1912 in Munich, Germany, and started out with a fleet of just three vehicles. As one of the first and most important international car rental companies in the world –  with over 100 years in the business – we have earned a trusted reputation as a global leading car rental provider. Always at the forefront of the industry, we were the first car rental company with a website and the first to accept mobile reservations. Today we are present in over 105 countries with branches in over 4,000 locations. You will be able to find our Sixt car rental services internationally, in almost every major city and tourist destination worldwide and at convenient locations such as airports, train stations, cruise ports, and hotels.

I love SIXT because they have gorgeous German imports that you can often get upgraded into, or snag a great deal on.

OK, but status often is all bark no bite…What does Platinum Status get me?

Sixt Platinum Status

Without this benefit it would require 10 rentals to achieve the status.

When I made my reservation I chose this

And then when I arrived I got this car. That’s like a double on double upgrade.

Sixt Platinum Status

Where others could have paid over $475…I paid just $143!

Not really a platinum upgrade like I was thinking. The info I got from MC travel services rep….the platinum status benefits only extend until Dec 31 2017 and you need to book the car through MC travel services. Somehow it’s tied to your reservation, it’s not like your Sixt account get upgraded.

I don’t see the citi / advantage platinum select card listed. is the status upgrade not available with this card? do I have to apply / get one of those listed? thanks……….

    • Miles October 19, 2017

wm – I didn’t include all possible cards in the post, just a few examples. as long as your card says World Elite…you should be fine. A couple years ago, cardholders would receive a world mastercard, and several months into card membership Citi would mail out world elite versions. if yours says world elite – you’re good to go.

And you can get Sixt Diamond status with Amex Centurion card

I’ve been Platinum with Sixt for a few years now, thanks to just what you’re advising here. I used to love Sixt a lot, the European cars they rent in the US are a nice change from the standard silver Toyota or Chevy I usually get offered with Hertz or National. However, the upgrades have been hit or miss for me, it really depends on the location – never have gotten an upgrade at PHX, always get a double upgrade at MCO – who knows. Also, it seems to me that Sixt rates have been going up quite a bit, at least in the locations I’ve been traveling to lately, so I’ve been using Hertz (Pres. Circle – same reason as my status at Sixt) about the same amount as I have Sixt. I will say, though, that in general I’ve enjoyed the customer service people at almost every Sixt location!
