January presented us with a plethora of point buying opportunities on many of my favorite currencies, and those deals are set to expire soon.  I always want to reiterate – buying points for the sake of boosting your balance isn’t the best decision. Rather, buy points when you know you have a trip you’re looking to book, and the cost of buying points is less than you’d pay otherwise.

For instance, Alaska Airlines has time and time again shown itself to be one of the most valuable airline programs for longhaul premium cabin redemptions. Just last year I used them to fly Qantas First Class, Qantas Business Class, Cathay Pacific Business Class and First Class all on one trip to Australia. Total haul? 150k points/pp for nearly $40k worth of flights.

It doesn’t stop with airlines, hotel programs like IHG, Hyatt, and Hilton are marketing their points at prices that make dream locations like Bora Bora within reach. Here’s a list of current sales, their expiration dates,  links to articles where we spell out the deals in more detail.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® is exceptional starter card and offers transferrable Ultimate Rewards, and pairs well with other Chase cards.
