Spirit Airlines offered a fantastic promotion earlier this year that allowed hotel and airline loyalists to match to their TOP TIER Gold status. It comes with most of the ancillary fees wavied + free pet fees, and all you needed to do was pay a one time $99 processing fee to apply. I took advantage of the offer, have flown Spirit twice, saved hundreds compared to competitors and will continue to fly Spirit consistently on flights under a couple hours. Their status match acquired them two new customers in my wife and I.

Cut to Frontier. I flew Frontier earlier this year as well, and found them to be roughly the same as Spirit; however, Spirit has a newer fleet that is equipped with WiFi at a an affordable rate. But, for better or worse, they are both bargain airlines that offer very low base fares and then nickel and dime you on the ancillary fees: Bags, seat assignments, printing boarding passes, carry on bag fees, etc. If you can avoid those fees, the savings are quite substantial.

Frontier has entered the chat…and promptly dropped a lackluster offer to acquire their lowest level status called 20k. Spirit required you to present status at 16 airlines or 16 hotel loyalty programs and you’d get status for a year after paying $99. Frontier is requiring a lot more, albeit, all you need to do to apply is have a US based travel rewards card.

      • Thereafter people will pay $199
    •  Instant Frontier Elite 20k Status
