Update 10/12/18 : Amex has published the following on their site – making Universal referral official:
In fact, prior to today, my Amex Mercedes Benz Platinum didn’t have the ability to refer. Now it does at 10k per referral. You can use this referral, or any you add to the comment section, to apply for another Amex you’d prefer.
Original: 10/09/18: American Express has maintained a great referral program that incentivizes its current customers into referring new customers by rewarding them with bonus points for each referral ( up to a certain amount ). It’s a fantastic way to earn bonus point. Historically, those referrals were limited to a specific card referring that exact card. It then moved to within a family of card, and now that’s changed even more.
DOC recently discovered that you could actually access most of Amex’s suite of cards via most any referral. I’ll walk you through exactly what that means, and what referral bonus you should expect to receive.
Here’s what my referral option looks like for the Amex Business Platinum.
If you click that link you’ll see this:
Keep scrolling down and you’ll notice the following menu
The original referral is highlighted. You can change it to “All Business Cards,” or as we are showing as an example with the new Amex Gold Card, to “looking for a personal card.”
Here’s what you’ll see when you change it to Looking for a Personal Card
17 different offers populated for me, and right on the top row is the American Express Gold Card. If you were to use this link to apply I would then earn a referral bonus based on my Amex Business Platinum referral offer – I’ll explain that in more detail…
Let’s say you wanted to refer the Gold card. You’d click on more card details:
The latest offer would pop up….and if you notice the link changes…it will start something like http://mgmee.americanexpress… that’s the link you would want to copy and paste to send to your referral – they would be linked straight to the Gold card and you’d receive a bonus based on the card you referred.
If you were to go to “All Business Cards” this is what you’d see
There are more business cards if you are on the screen and continue to scroll down. So if you wanted to refer someone to any of these cards you’d follow the same steps, copy the link and send to them.
So what bonus will you earn?
As confirmed by TPG, you should earn the bonus from the card you referred from, in this case Amex Business Platinum. If you were to use my link and go through the above steps, I’d receive 15k bonus points per referral, up to 55k. Each card has a unique referral offer, so these will change based on the card you refer from – it’s also worth noting that the bonus amount will change, but also will the currency
If you refer from a Hilton family card, you’ll earn your bonus in Hilton points. If it’s SPG, you’ll earn SPG/Marriott points, and so on even if the person signs up for a Membership Rewards earning card. In other words
- Miles Amex Biz Plat referral —> Jenny signs up for Hilton Aspire —-> Miles earns Membership Rewards
- Miles Amex Hilton Aspire —> Jenny signs up for Amex Gold —-> Miles earns Hilton Honors
If you’d like to help us out by using our referral link, that’s awesome, but also feel free to add your referral codes to the bottom.
