Chase recently amped up the benefits on both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve and generated a lot of press in doing so. Not to be outdone…Amex pumped up some transfer bonuses. Now…Chase has dropped a, limited time, 30% transfer bonus when you transfer Ultimate Rewards into British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus. This is on the heels of the 50% Marriott transfer bonus that just ended on August 31st.
If you have travel coming up and could utilize these bonuses…amazing, if not, I wouldn’t recommend moving points over to these programs just because they’re on offer.
The easiest place to see how many British Airways Avios it will take is here
The transfer bonus runs until September 26th at 11:59pm ESTWhat are some great uses of British Airways Avios?
In the past I have primarily used these to upgrade a discount business class fare into first class. For roughly 25k Avios you can upgrade a flight from the West Coast to England for just 25k Avios…or 18k Ultimate Rewards with this promo. I’ve also done it from Chicago where it only required 20k Avios…just 15k Ultimate Rewards with this promo.
American Airlines and Alaska Airlines
Another great use is domestically in economy or first class. In the past I traveled quite a bit between LAX and Indiana where much of my family is located. If cash rates were really high, I’d make use of redeeming British Airways Avios for American Airlines flights and fly econ for just 10k Avios, or 20k in first class. With this promo, that’s just 7k or 14k Ultimate Rewards. Pretty solid value as we see flight prices creep higher.
You can fly to Hawaii in econ for just 13k Avios…that’s under 10k Ultimate Rewards
Another option that is now bookable on British Airways site is Alaska Airlines – this traditionally was only bookable over the phone, but since Alaska joined One World this is now possible online as well. The same strategy applies, and you can find some really great deals this way.
How about Iberia?
By far, bar none, the very best use of Iberia Avios is to redeem on a flight from the East Coast of the US to Madrid in business class. This can be done for just 34k Avios, or 68k roundtrip. That’s just 49k Ultimate Rewards!
And you’d fly like this – you can read our review here.
