I’m near taking the bait.

Life is funny. This past weekend I was talking to some friends about how I used to get targeted for Hyatt Residence Club timeshare previews all the time. The biggest difference between then and now was that I had the Hyatt credit card then, and I don’t currently carry it now. I had been targeted several times for both Hawaii, and Sedona, Arizona. My past Sedona offers were the best: $99 a night plus 15k bonus points, and the Hawaii ones were $600 or $700 for 4 or 5 nights. It was like the Universe ( or maybe Facebook, lol) heard me…a couple of days later I received an offer to the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa: 5 nights, 6 days for $695 AND I would receive 12k World of Hyatt points. All I’d have to do is listen to a 90 minute timeshare spiel. I haven’t been back to Hawaii in ages, and this seems like a great offer to pull the trigger:

The value proposition:

The Hyatt Regency Maui isn’t cheap: Here’s a random weekend in July…5 nights average $450 a night plus taxes, fees, and a daily resort fee of $32.

The offer from Hyatt Residence Club is $695 all in. No resort fees. Plus, I’d earn 12k points. At just 1.5 cents I’m getting $180 back in value, dropping the overall cost to $515. Worst case a savings of over $2k, pro-rated at $140 a night. That’s a great deals

There are caveats:

  • Combined income over $125k
  • 27+ years of age
  • If you don’t go to the seminar…the credit card on file will be charged the daily resort rate during your stay. I.E. you don’t wanna try and scam them and dip out
  • Nonrefundable deposit of $500
  • Have 12 months to use
  • Can change for $100 fee up to 15 days ahead of arrival. Otherwise forfeit the deposit and opporunity.
  • Incidentals are you own responsibility
  • World of Hyatt benefits aren’t recognized
    • I had wanted to use an Explorist upgrade cert…no go
    • No upgrades with points to a suite, etc.

My feeling on the offer:

I’m heavily considering taking the plunge. I could hopefully review Hawaiian Airlines business class ( a great redemption of Ultimate Rewards at 60k roundtrip) to get there and back. I’d have to go to a 90 minute presentation, which would be an interesting comparison to timeshare programs my family already own in IHG and Marriott. I doubt I’d ever spend $400-500 a night to stay here as I’d redeem a stay with points when available, but it’s a great rate for 5 nights in paradise. I could also add on a couple of nights with points and cash ahead of time – apply a club upgrade certificate and hope they could just join the reservations. Otherwise…maybe a club upgrade could be negotiated at check-in.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

Annual fee is quite low at $95 a year + you get a 10% anniversary bonus on points + $50 hotel credit in Chase travel.

We stayed a night at the HRC in Maui a few years ago to fill out a stay, and that’s probably why we received this same offer (plus we have Hyatt credit cards). We signed up to do it Sept. 2020. We’ve done several before, with Westin. One was at the Sheraton in Kauai (Poipu), which was only OK (good deal, though, I think it included the car). But it was a hotel room, uggh. Then last year we did the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas North. That was much nicer, although the new Nanea property next door, which we toured, is even better. But back to HRC: the condo we stayed in on our paid stay was gorgeous: ocean view 2BR on an upper floor. Our offer this time says “2BR 2BA suite”, so I certainly hope it’s in the same complex; I’d be pissed if they put us in the hotel. This will probably be our third and last time-share offer deal, at least in Maui. We have been many times and prefer South Maui, especially the Makena Surf condo, and probably prefer Princeville in Kauai even more.

Have you stayed at one of their hotel locations that also has a Residence Club there (Maui/Carmel/Tahoe/etc) in the past before receiving these offers? Just curious the best way to get targeted (is it random or actually targeted for a reason) and I heard some mention from others that after staying at the HR in Maui they started receiving these and was wondering if there was a correlation there or just a coincidence. I have received them many times in the past from SPG (RIP) but never from Hyatt…

My wife and I just got back from what looks like this very same offer. They put us up in the hotel nextdoor…it’s in need of a makeover but still acceptable – especially if you are a “go out and see the island” person who does an activity every day. The luau was pretty good…not Old Lahaina good, but still very respectable and the fire show was awesome as well. Definitely go up to the rooftop and take the telescope tour…you get to check out the rings of Saturn from a killer telescope on the roof!

The tour was VERY low pressure…the actual building they are selling is next door, and it’s a ‘deed’ sale vs. buying points. The resort next door is INCREDIBLE.

Timeshare presentation was great…when we said the timing wasn’t right, that was the end – no condescending remarks or pressure, everyone was very respectful and understanding.

What WAS nice was that they offered a ‘come back and check us out’ offer. For $2500 it included 5 days 4 nights, all resort fees covered (including the $22/night parking fee) to come back in the next 24 months and you get to stay those 4 nights in the actual resort (for us it will be a 2 bedroom/2 bath on an upper floor ocean front)…plus enough points to get an additional 2 nights at the hotel next door to make it a total of 7 days 6 nights.

If you price out the stay in a similar room (2 bed/2 bath/upper floor ocean front) you end up with between $500 and $1200 a night or more based on season…and where you still pay resort fees and the rest. So even on the low season you come out even, and if you can book during the higher season, you really come out ahead.

We are going back with my mother-in-law to see if she may be interested in going in with us. Highly recommend this as a trip – you get to go to a beautiful spot in Maui and the presentation is for a great building and is very low pressure. Easiest 90 minutes I’ve ever spent!

I used to get these offers for the properties is Hawaii, Carmel, etc but then they stopped. I just canceled my Hyatt card, so hopefully I’ll get these offers again. I wasn’t ready to jump on these offers in the past, but now that I’m married, I’m all for it!

We got an offer a few years ago that was $1495 for a 2BR stay at the actual Hyatt Residence. We called and they were able to get us into a 1BR for $995. The only problem was it was a mountain view…but we didn’t care. We ended the trip with a 2 night stay at the Hyatt Regency that we were upgraded into a suite using a Diamond upgrade.

I would strongly suggest calling and see if you can stay at the actual residence instead. We were underwhelmed with the Regency next door. It was okay and I doubt at $695 you will be disappointed. But the Hyatt Residence absolutely BLOWS the Regency out of the water. The pools are is better and less crowded. The 1Br and 2BR units are some of the nicest I’ve seen in any timeshare I’ve been to.

$695 is a great deal for the Regency. But if there is anyway to move to the residence DO IT!

How do you find 60k Hawaiian business through UR? The portal?

    • Miles March 29, 2018

Convert to Korean to redeem on Hawaiian 🙂

  • Patrick March 29, 2018

    No car included?
SPG had a similar offer for one of their properties but they included a car.
