This is an absolutely amazing offer, and if you’re currently under 5/24 you should heavily consider it. Chase Freedom Unlimited is technically a cash back card, so you’ll see the offer structure the spend bonus as 3% back on all purchases, but if you carry any Chase card that earns Ultimate Rewards, you can convert your Freedom Unlimited Cash Back into Ultimate Rewards. You can go here to learn how to do it. I’ll break down the strategy below, but it’s a great way to get massive earn on your every day spend, and get closer to that aspirational redemption.
The breakeven point of this deal vs the normal Chase Freedom Unlimited sign up bonus
This particular offer doesn’t include a sign up bonus, which normally is $150 cash back after spending $500. That equates to 15000 points, after which you would earn 1.5% back on all purchases.
The math would look like this
- 3x = 15000 +1.5x
Meaning if you plan on spending more than 10,000 on the card in the first year you’ll do better with the 3x offer than the normal $150 cash back plus 1.5x on all spend.
If you carry a Chase Sapphire Reserve, this pairing effectively earns you 4.5 cents back when redeeming through the Chase Travel Center
You’ll earn 3 cents on every dollar when you spend on the Chase Freedom Unlimited. Then once you transfer those into your Reserve account, they are instantly converted to Ultimate Rewards, and Reserve account holders are able to redeem Ultimate Rewards at 1.5 cents in the mall. 3 x 1.5 = 4.5 cents. Incredible value.
Here’s a look at the benefits:
If you make quarterly tax payments this could be something to consider as you’re effectively making over 1% back.
If you spend $2100 a month for 12 month you’ll have enough points (76k) to fly Singapore Suites from JFK to FRA. That is pretty awesome.
Assuming you can convert them to UR of course.
