This is news to me and I like it.
Earlier this year, American restructured their upgrade policy. It started in May and began prioritizing EQD as the biggest factor, second to status, to issue upgrades. They also followed with upgrading award tickets. I’ve had a few award tickets upgraded this year, but they were always booked using American’s own currency, Aadvantage. I recently flew to see my family in Indiana and booked my return flight home with Avios. In order to select better seats on my return flight, I took my BA record locator and opened my itinerary on AA.com and inserted my Aadvantage number, which reflects my Executive Platinum Status. After selecting seats I also noticed I was added to the complimentary upgrade list. I double checked it by opening the AA app and not only saw my reservation, but that I was indeed added to the request list for a complimentary upgrade. Interesting…
Today my upgrade cleared and I confirmed my seat. AA upgraded my Avios award booking to First Class.
The other thing about this situation that is confounding is my travel mate, who is also Exec Plat and has more EQD than I, hasn’t cleared, but is on the same flight booked with AA miles. Something doesn’t add up, but much like I did to Tyler when he was seated in econ when I flew back from Mini Bacon this summer, I’ll have Miles wave :0)
