Playa Del Carmen travel advisory has been downgraded as well.

Playa Del Carmen has gorgeous beaches, nightlife, and beautiful resorts. Unfortunately, it’s also been hit with a wave of negative publicity. Just last month a ferry boat explosion injured 5 citizens, and within days the same ferry boat company was targeted again with explosive devices found on a different boat.  While Mexican officials promote the very low odds that Americans will get caught up in cartel violence, it didn’t stop the U.S. Embassy from closing their consulate, and prohibiting personnel from traveling to the area. Today, we find out that the Embassy has revised the restrictions, lifting the overall travel ban to Playa Del Carmen and restricting its employees from entering 5 neighborhoods around the resort town.

Via the U.S. Embassy…

Due to an ongoing security threat, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is revising its travel restrictions to Playa del Carmen for U.S. government personnel.  U.S. government personnel are prohibited from travel to Centro, Calica, Gonzalo Guerrero, Quintas del Carmen, and Villas del Carmen neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen.  These neighborhoods are bordered by Avenida Benito Juarez, 50 Avenida Sur (Highway 307), and Calle 34 Norte.  U.S. citizens should avoid those neighborhoods until further notice.  U.S. government personnel are authorized to travel to resort areas in Riviera Maya including those near Playa del Carmen that are outside the restricted neighborhoods of this Alert.

In addition to this information we find at the the U.S. government has listed 5 states as dangerous as Syria and Iraq. This is classified as a Level 4 travel advisory.

A map outlining those areas in Playa would have been helpful.

The “neighborhoods” listed in the warning are the main areas in Playa.

So, it’s okay to stay at a fancy resort but don’t go to Playa. Guess the Hyatt is going to hit with decreased bookings since it’s in the danger zone.

Well, the “negative publicity” they were hit with came after the ferry explosion-which injured two dozen people and appeared to be a act of terrorism. Cartel violence has been a major problem in Mexico, and some of the stories in recent years have been nothing short of horrific-people beheaded, tourists held for ransom, and there being a major turf war between cartels this year marking the deadliest year on record. Mexico isn’t officially a warzone, but the cartels haven’t exactly shown restraint when it comes to violence.

Will the State Department also issue warnings about pretty much every large U.S. city as well? Advising some caution is fine, but given the level of violence domestically, this smacks either of hypocrisy or a whole lot of stupidity. The same as Syria? How exactly are we supposed to trust these clowns when they do things like this?
