You’d be buying miles for roughly 2.15 cents a piece.
Airlines have been more and more aggressive with their mileage sales. AA basically offers their miles at “discount” every month, and Alaska runs a quarterly sale that drops their miles down to roughly the same price that United is currently offering theirs. Why? They make an insane amount of money doing it. We’re talking 8 figures a year. Their hope is that you’ll burn your miles redeeming for silly things like non-saver level domestic economy seats. We know better – we aim to lie flat and sip champers like ballers 😉
It’s no surprise that United has had some very attractive mileage sales in the last year, and this is one of the better deals we’ve seen ( I believe the best was last year at 100% bonus). I’d never advocate buying miles speculatively becuase you never know what airlines may/may not do with devaluation. Case in point, look at the fiasco with Alaska this past week and the temporary restriction on close-in bookings. With that said…if you have a redemption in mind and you’re short…this is an attractive level to pick up some miles.
