Putting this one up as fast as possible so I haven’t checked all of the different configurations, but currently out of Dallas you can fly to Japan on AA’s 787-9 via LAX for just 45k AA miles. Typically this is 60k, but more poignant is the fact that AA rarely makes their space available. If you price is out of LA directly you won’t see the space. I hate to say hit…but AA is making their new calendar function a must use to find these advantageous pricing schemes on married segments.

The 787-9 features seating similar to the 772 fit with Super Diamonds – arguably AA’s best business class seat.

Here you can see the calendar function Jan/Feb – search more dates as I just got this up quickly

We keep an up to date spreadsheet that lists the best ever offers: You can find that spreadsheet here.

Historically 80k is a very, very good offer and hit in both 2022 and 2023. In 2021, we saw the offer hit an all time high of 100k. Who knows if that will ever come back.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® is exceptional starter card and offers transferrable Ultimate Rewards, and pairs well with other Chase cards.

If you carry this card alongside Chase’s cashback cards like the Chase Freedom Flex®  and Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the business versions: Ink Business Cash® , Ink Business Unlimited® you can combine the points into Preferred account and transfer into hotel and airline partners

Annual fee is quite low at $95 a year + you get a 10% anniversary bonus on points + $50 hotel credit in Chase travel.

  • […] enough point to fly roundtrip business class almost anywhere in the world. In fact, AA has web specials to Japan as low as 45k each way. You could fly roundtrip and still have 55k miles […]

I never credited American with an abundance of intelligence, but in this case I may be wrong. If you’re going to go with variable pricing as they’re doing, at least start with better deals. I intensely dislike the premise of variable pricing overall, since it kills the concept of getting good value on awards, but with this method of introduction at least AA can start with a favorable premise before making things much worse for engaged customers.

On a separate note, any idea how I keep the popup on the bottom from appearing? I try not to block ads because I know that bloggers derive revenue from them, but having to click them shut every. single. time. is really awful and makes me want to visit BA blogs much less.

Christian – there have certainly been some great deals come out here lately…I’m cautiously optimistic it could resemble Air France vs Delta

Regarding the pop up… is that to subside be to my site or something else? The subscription shouldn’t load every time

      • Christian December 23, 2019

The popup is about an inch high and comes up on every BA blog. You have to manually X it out every time. I’m not sure about a subscription.
