What an absolute joke. I’m not exactly sure who the blogger was that first caught this, cover of night, price increase but it’s a total head shaker. As airlines flight patterns circle the drain, someone at AA either decided to not cancel an scheduled price hike, or had the bright idea to do it when, hopefully, no one was looking. As you can see below, as of April 21, 2020, the cost of checking a bag in basic econ, transatlantic, has increased from $60 to $75. We’ve seen fares as low as $300 to fly from the East Coast to Europe, and with airlines on the ropes, instead of folding in bag fees to incentivize future travel, AA jacked them up $15.
Part of me thinks this had to of been a scheduled price increase and maybe they’ll put a moratorium on it once tatl flights ramp up, but it’s inexcusable. They definitely got my praise for how they extended status and lowered requirements regarding elite qualification, but this is a goodwill destroyer at its best, and a great example of why people love to hate airlines.
