Alaska Airlines releases their earn rate on Virgin America Flights

Today was a big day for Alaska Airlines news. They announced several things that I will get into, but I wanted to take a look first at some news that relates to their merger with Virgin America. The merger created the 5th largest airline in the country and has formed an interesting meld of corporate environments. I really like how Alaska is handling the entire process – they are treating the customer as their friend and advocate. HOW CRAZY IS THIS?! I don’t really even know how to handle it. But I like it.  Emphasis on the customer, their experience, and loyalty are all acknowledged with how they announce new information. Alaska Airlines releases their earn rate on Virgin American flights and I think it’s quite attractive.

This news couldn’t come at a better time…I just matched to Alaska Airlines MVP GOLD 75!!!!!

How many Alaska Air miles will you earn flying on Virgin America?

This chart will tell us.

How does that compare to Alaska Air metal?

I don’t think we could have asked for any better than this, and really I think it’s exactly what I had hoped for. An equal earning potential ( at least from my first assessment) flying on either Virgin America or Alaska Airlines.

I’ll get into how they’ve enriched their partner earning ( which is incred ) on my next post, but Alaska is really sugaring the pie IMO. These two companies have very different cultures and product offerings, but the thing they have in common: LOYAL CUSTOMERS. Alaska and Virgin America customers LOVE their airlines, and if you’ve ever flown them you can understand why. It’s nice to see an airline sticking with the one mile flown, at least one mile earned program as well. I’m looking forward to my goal of MVP GOLD 75 next year =)

hey monkey miles. been enjoying and reading your Alaska Miles posts. i just status matched from Delta Platinum to MVP Gold 75K. my wife and i have flights from LAS-JFK (R fare) marketed as AS but in VX metal. R fare isn’t on the earning chart here so im assuming it earns nothing on AS Mileage Plan and i read your post about not getting R fare miles to your AA account. but am i correct in assuming that we’d earn nothing by crediting to AS? (not even EQMs or 125% elite bonus) after the merger, im not clear on what is an AS flight and what is a VX flight? is it the same? or are AS marketed but VX metal flights treated differently? in this case, would we be better off crediting to Elevate and then transferring to Mileage Plan. would really appreciate your thoughts. thanks!

Hey Sami – I would call Alaska to confirm this, but it’s my understanding that ALL Virgin America flights earn Alaska EQM and RDM if credited to AS. I believe R would earn 100% base miles, 100% EQM, and then your 125% MVP 75K bonus on top of it, but no additional class of service bonuses.
