Qatar Airways was folded into the Avios program a couple years back, and since Amex is partners with British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia, and you can merge the points of any Avios member ( BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar ) you could technically move Amex points into Qatar’s program for quite some time now. This official announcement makes it a lot more simple and straight forward and gives Amex its 21st partner.
Link your Qatar Airways and British Airways Accounts
Once you link your accounts, any points that currently reside in either account will show up in the other one. Until August 31st, 2023 Amex is offering up a 30% transfer bonus to Qatar Airways so it would make more sense to transfer to BA and get the bonus rather than directly to Qatar Airways. You can read more on how to do that here.
Once you link, your account will look like this when you check balances
- This makes it much easier to book QSuites with Qatar Airways pricing since British Airways is a partner of a few flexible currencies and Qatar Airways isn’t.
- You can book Qatar Airways and British Airways on the portal, but you’ll need to phone in to make other bookings
- One thing I’ve noticed is that not all BA space populates on the Qatar website
Finding award space
One thing I will note…there have been many reports that people have issues finding any award space on Qatar Airways unless enough points are in their account for the booking. This isn’t every single time, but it’s quite often.
Overall
This should make it more straight forward for members to book Qatar Airways flights via transferring Amex Membership Rewards
