If it’s looking like your won’t be able to use your Marriott Vacation Club points within their intended use year, Marriott Vacation Club offers its owners the option to extend the life of your points through a process called banking. Depending on your underlying Marriott Vacation Club status, this will give you an extra 12-24 months to use your points before they expire for good. The only catch is that once you bank you will not be able to use your points until the next calendar year starts, and you need to do this within 6 to 4 months of your use year expiring ( again dependent on status). Let’s take a look at how to bank you Marriott Vacation Club points

The process of banking is quite simple to do, and we have banked points several years in a row, but this year we actually ran into a situation where we were going to be unable to use our banked points prior to their final expiration.  If you’re in a similar situation, give Marriott a call, as we were able to secure an additional 18 months with some restrictions. Long story short…we had points from 2018 that we had banked, and they were set to expire in July of 2020, but now, we have access to them until the end of 2021.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

As I mention in many of my breakdowns for hotel cards…the annual anniversary night usually outweighs the annual fee.

For $95 a year, you’ll earn an anniversary night good at properties up to 35k a year. You can add 15k to these certificates as well, but keep in mind, this point range will probably be useful on road trips or nights near a hotel…not uber luxury properties.

You’ll also start get 15 elite nights per year which is fantastic if you’re chasing Marriott status.

First…check your Vacation Club Points Balance

Here are the rules for banking points

There are currently 5 tiers of Marriott Vacation Club Ownership, and you need to realize that once you indicate you are banking, you will not be able to use those points until January 1st of the following year.

When you need to notify:

  • 6 Months prior to the end of the use year
    • The first 2 tiers of ownership, Owner and Select, must indicate to Marriott Vacation Club their intention to bank 6 months prior to the end of the year. That would be June 30th.
  • 4 Months prior to the end of the use year
    • The 3 top tiers, Executive/Presidential/Chairman’s Club must notify Marriott Vacation Club before August 30th

How long you will extend your points

  • 12 months
    • Owner, Select, Executive
  • 18 months
    • Presidential
  • 24 months
    • Chairman’s Club

How we extended our Banked points for an additional 18 months

We had a considerable amount of Banked points due to expire this July, and due to Covid, we were unable to use them. After phoning our Presidential line we were put on a brief hold and given the following option…extend the points for an additional 18 months with the following caveats

  • They had to be used exclusively for Marriott Vacation Club properties
  • They had to be booked within 120 days of arrival

You can see how they are now shown in our account.

Recap

If it’s looking as though you won’t have use for your Marriott Vacation Club points during their intended use year, banking can be a great way to extend the life of your points so they don’t go to waste.  After you’ve banked, and have the option to prioritize your banked points so you make sure and use them up before using your next year’s points, or even combining them all together to enjoy a longer holiday.

Thanks this information is timely I have not left my island country of Barbados due to COVID. I am an Owner and in the future will be banking my points early as for some reason with COVID I forgot to diary it and missed the deadline for banking. My options are either use through Explorer Collection or go through Interval International. I prefer to not go through Interval as I can never find accommodations where and when I want to travel. I think this year I will try to use the Explorer Collection feature.

Hi Miles – we are a Select owner. We missed the June 30 deadline to bank our points and due to COVID can’t use them anywhere. MVC is saying our only option is to convert them to Interval, which we would rather not do. Any idea how to convince MVC to allow us to bank for next year when (we hope?) travel resumes?
