How to transfer Marriott Bonvoy points

In 2023, Marriott just made it very easy to transfer points between accounts. If you were unaware that you could do this, it’s been a perk for years, but annoyingly, the IT wouldn’t allow you to do it online and you’d have to phone it. Weirdly, they’ve kind of buried the feature on their website, so I wanted to provide a direct link to transfer Marriott Bonvoy Points, but update you on how to find it should you need to locate it within your account.

The max is still capped at 100k points per year, but you can complete the transfer online, saving the hassle of phoning in. This should be very advantageous if you’re taking a trip with someone who has higher status than you and you’d like to split the cost and move your points into their account, or if someone is short on points, you could transfer from one Marriott account to the other to shore up the needed amount. Let’s take a look at how to do this!

Things to know before transferring points:

  • You must transfer increments of 1000 points
  • You can only transfer 100k from a single account
  • An account can only receive 500k points in a year
  • Accounts are in good standing and have each been open for at least thirty (30) days with qualifying activity,
  • (90) days without qualifying activity.

The most simple: Go here to transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to another member

It’s very simply, just click the link up above, and fill in the information below. You’ll receive a text/email asking you to confirm the transfer, and voila, the points will move.

Your account will show the transfer as points sharing:

How many points can I share in a calendar year?

100k points total. This isn’t to a single account, but rather in aggregate across all accounts you transfer points to in a calendar year.

  • Calendar year = January through December

Theoretically if you wanted to give someone 200k points within 24 hours, you could do so on December 31st, and then again on January 1st.

If you had 100k points in your account, another member could merge 100k, and you could potentially stay 5 nights in NYC for 200k points. Pretty great way to make use of transferring points and staying in an expensive city

How many points can I receive in a calendar year?

You can receive multiple point transfers into a single account, but the maximum you’re allowed to receive is 500k in a calendar year. So, if you’re having a wedding, and you’d like contributions, you could receive, at maximum 500k points in a January to December year.

The Grosvenor House London is one of my favorite London Properties and you can often find find between 50k and 65k per night.

Your account needs to be open either 30 or 90 days

In order to transfer or receive points your account needs to have been open a minimum amount of time.

  • With Activity: 30 days
  • Without Activity: 90 days

Activity is defined as such here and if you transfer points into your account from Amex, Chase, etc that will qualify.

Members can remain active in the Loyalty Program and retain accumulated Points by earning Points or Miles, redeeming Points, or purchasing Points (as described in 2.9) in the Loyalty Program at least once every twenty-four (24) months

How long do points transfers take?

I’ve done it a few times and they have been instant. Log out, and back in, the points have been here.

If you want to find it in your account:

Step 1 Log in to your account

You’ll want to click on About Marriott Bonvoy, you’ll then see “How to Use Points/Certificates”

Step 2: How to use Marriott Bonvoy Points

Scroll all the way to the bottom – you’ll share “Share your Points”

Step 3 – fill out the Combine Marriott Points form

You’ll see this and there is a link to the “Point Transfer Tool Online”

This is great and quite straight forward

This is a massive improvement and that will make transferring points from one member to another a lot easier and more straight forward

We keep an up to date spreadsheet that lists the best ever offers: You can find that spreadsheet here.

Historically 80k is a very, very good offer and hit in both 2022 and 2023. In 2021, we saw the offer hit an all time high of 100k. Who knows if that will ever come back.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is great starter card and offers transferrable Ultimate Rewards, and pairs well with other Chase cards.

If you carry this card alongside Chase’s cashback cards like the Chase Freedom Flex®  and Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the business versions: Chase Ink Business Cash® ,  Chase Ink Business Unlimited® you can combine the points into the Sapphire Preferred account and transfer into hotel and airline partners

Annual fee remains quite low at $95 a year and if you use the $100 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit via Chase Travelâ„  you’ll wipe out that annual fee every year.  It has great bonus categories and other useful statement credits to enhance your travel.

One thing that is a bummer is Chase lowered the transfer ratio to World of Hyatt from 1:1 to 4:3.
