I received an email from the venerable Randy Petersen that a journalist over at the BBC was writing an article on tips and tricks for holiday travel. Miles was extremely excited at the prospect of being a part of anything BBC. He quickly made a cup of Tetley tea, ate some digestives, and turned on the Beatles to warm up the ol’ loaf for some across the ‘pond’ering.
Here’s the main thing that Miles provided for the BBC article: How to win at holidays
Use a fake location
Some airlines sell cheaper tickets depending on the location of sale, especially if you’re trying to book a domestic flight. Sneaky, eh? Play around with changing your location on the airline website to bring the pounds down. You can do this by:
– changing the currency you’re booking in
– Search through Google’s ITA Matrix, software that allows you to compare fares and see a calendar of prices.
When you go to ITA Matrix, you have the option to select a ‘Sales City’, which becomes your point of sale.
– Trick a website into thinking you’re somewhere else using a VPN service. A little more techie but works a charm – more details here. (It’s also a handy trick to watch US Netflix, if you’re so inclined).
