How to book SkyTeam partners with Delta SkyMiles

Let’s just say Delta’s award program can drive a Monkey bonkers! So when a friend asked for some advice on planning a european vacation, Miles peeled a banana and started working away.

The parameters were

  • some time in mid july – preferably July 15th
  • a one way ticket into Marseille from Washington D.C.
  • save as much money, time, and MILES

One trick to finding great space on to use Delta SkyMiles is to actually use Air France Flying Blue search engine. It does a much better job of showing a fuller array of award availability

Let’s take a look at what delta was showing:

Delta Award Avail
Delta Award Avail

Now just to be clear, it should cost 30,000 if it’s at its cheapest for a one way award from North America to Europe. These rates are horrendous. A closer look at July 15th, the preferred date:

I mean…. not the most ideal route to go along with an absolutely egregious amount of points for a coach flight!!!

Now…let’s take a look at what can be found using Air France…

What we will be searching for are the “CLASSIC” awards.

And then business class

And then again, closer at the 15th…for Business class!

Sooooo what does this mean??

It means that there are flights that are available to fly on the 15th and for the cheapest rate possible: 30,000.  In fact, there are business class flights on Air France that would go for 62,500 points – that’s 7500 less than what Delta is showing for Coach!!!!!!

Remember the trick is to look for “CLASSIC” award seat avail. That is what you will be able to book with Partner miles – in this case Delta!

We keep an up to date spreadsheet that lists the best ever offers: You can find that spreadsheet here.

Historically 60k is a very, very good offer. In 2021, we saw the offer hit an all time high of 100k. Who knows if that will ever come back. .

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.
