Marriott extends free night certificates &
pauses point expiration
Travel is coming back and Marriott is incentivizing loyalty members with Free Night Awards by extending their expiration! They didn’t stop there either; they halted the expiration of points until March 31st, 2022. Here’s the long and short of it:
Free night awards are extended until January 3rd, 2022 if…
- You have a free night award that would have expired before January 2nd, 2022
- Cobranded credit card elite nights
- Annual choice benefit
- Promotions or packages
- If your night would have expired prior to 2020…it’s not included.
There is no need to do anything as the system will automatically update May 6th, 2021.
Points expiration has been paused until March 31st, 2022
At this point, only points that have been inactive for 24 months with expire.
Overall
I’m of the volition that travel is going to absolutely come roaring back as the year goes on. Having some elite nights that push well past summer 2021 when the bulk of travel will continue to gain steam is a nice move by Marriott and may incentivize people to build trips around those nights. Plus…the properties hosting those free nights will reap the benefit of food and beverage purchases on property and people in rooms.
