Well, now we know why MGM and Hyatt got divorced. Starting in October 2023, MGM and Marriott will begin a 20 year partnership that will create a new MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy. The wording makes it sound like Marriott is buying these properties, but they aren’t. They are simply carving out 17 MGM Resorts that will be integrated into the Marriott Bonvoy booking platforms ( app and website ). Let’s dig in a bit deeper on what we know, and what we don’t know at this juncture.

Starting in October you’ll be able to enjoy this view and either earn or burn Marriott Bonvoy points ( fountain view room at Bellagio )

Which MGM properties will be a part of MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy?

All of these properties will populate the Marriott app as well as be bookable on Marriott.com – they will also be available as normal on the MGM app and website. The only thing, and correct me if I missed this, is whether any Marriott properties will populate the MGM app or Website.

4 MGM properties will be affiliated with existing Marriott brands:

  • Bellagio Resort & Casino will join The Luxury Collection
  • ARIA Resort & Casino will join Autograph Collection,
  • Park MGM will become part of Tribute Portfolio
  • The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will continue its affiliation with Autograph Collection.

8 MGM Resorts in Las Vegas will be bookable via MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy:

These will not have any Marriott brand affiliation, but rather you’ll be able to earn and burn points there.

  • Vdara Hotel & Spa,
  • MGM Grand Hotel & Casino,
  • NoMad Las Vegas,
  • The Signature at MGM Grand,
  • Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino,
  • New York-New York Hotel & Casino,
  • Luxor Hotel and Casino,
  • Excalibur Hotel & Casino.

5 US based ( Non Vegas ) locations will be folded in as well

  •  Borgata (Atlantic City, New Jersey),
  • Beau Rivage (Biloxi, Mississippi),
  • MGM Grand Detroit (Michigan),
  • MGM National Harbor (Maryland),
  • MGM Springfield (Massachusetts).

NoMad is one of my favorite hotels:

What about status and benefits from MGM Rewards or Marriott Bonvoy?

The only information we have right now is that member of each program will enjoy benefits when staying at the other brand. What benefits will they enjoy? No idea. Will Marriott Platinum and Titanium members get free breakfast when staying at Bellagio or NoMad? Unclear.

What I think will happen is that Marriott elite member will be able to status match to MGM Rewards, and whatever the benefits of the tier that they match to will be extended. I could be wrong, and upon check in, if you attach your Marriott Bonvoy number all those benefits could extend…maybe even suite upgrades, but my hopes are not high on this one.

You will be able to move points between programs:

This is the quote from Marriott and I underlined the section that says you’ll be able to move points between the two programs. What they don’t say is at what exchange rate. The devil is in the details here and I would guess that it will not be 1:1

Travelers visit Las Vegas for everything from food and wine to sports, music, gaming, and more. Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards will unlock significant benefits and experiences for members of both programs. Marriott Bonvoy members will enjoy benefits at MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy resorts and MGM Rewards members will receive certain benefits at Marriott Bonvoy’s global portfolio of more than 8,500 properties, while members of both programs will also be able to exchange MGM Rewards points for Marriott Bonvoy points and vice versa. Marriott Bonvoy Moments, the program providing members access to unparalleled experiences that fuel personal passions, will be enhanced by MGM’s unmatched culinary, entertainment and sports offerings. More information about linking loyalty accounts, new experiences and other loyalty program benefits will be provided to members of both programs in the coming months.

BetMGM and Marriott partnership

BetMGM is MGM Resorts International online gaming and sport betting shingle.

  • It looks like there will be the option to earn Marriott Bonvoy points when making BetMGM transactions.
  • Exchange BetMGM Rewards into Marriott Bonvoy Points

Marriott credit cards

As you are well aware, Marriott has cobranded credit cards from both Chase and Amex. This is one of the most streamlined ways of getting elite nights, and if you pony over hefty annual fees, even claim Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status via the Brilliant card. If you go to Vegas a lot, and they end up striking a deal that includes a breakfast benefit…the value prop of these cards could increase quite bit since you’d be recouping the fee via on property benefits. That is still yet to be seen, but people love Vegas, and this has the potential to add ancillary value to those lovers.

Overall

There is still a lot more to learn, and the only thing that is certain at this point is Marriott and MGM are partnered for a long time, and Marriott elites will be pining to get free breakfast at some of the strip’s most well known breakfast buffets.  Will the benefits be good enough to mattress run vegas? Time will tell, but my feeling is probably not…especially since you can straight up get platinum status via credit card.
