Rakuten has put a huge portion of their shopping portal at 15% cashback, or as I like to earn, 15x earn rate on Amex points. You may even find some trading at 90x ( lifelock ) or 100x ( NordVpn)

From May 6th to 13th Rakuten is having their annual sale. I’m not exactly sure if each store will run 15x the entire week so it’d be worth checking the site or the app to see how things change each day. Also note, the app sometimes has different pricing than the site.

You can earn cashback or Amex points via Rakuten

If you are unaware, Rakuten ( formerly Ebates ) partnered with American Express and gave its members the option to earn Amex Membership Rewards in lieu of Cashback. The rate: 1% = 1 Membership Reward. Read this article if you want to learn more.

Personally, I find this to be a far more attractive option since I value Membership Rewards anywhere between 1.5 and 2 cents. This current promo means you could earn an effective 21/ 28% back in the form of points.

Overall

15x as a widespread promo is pretty darn good. If memory serves, we’ve seen Black Friday pop up to 20x in the past, but I believe those were covid times and it wasn’t on the majority of stores. It will definitely be worth taking a peek to see if some of the purchases you need in the future can be made at a higher rate of return. I’ll likely buy my Nike’s that I really like.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® is exceptional starter card and offers transferrable Ultimate Rewards, and pairs well with other Chase cards.

If you carry this card alongside Chase’s cashback cards like the Chase Freedom Flex®  and Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the business versions: Ink Business Cash® , Ink Business Unlimited® you can combine the points into Preferred account and transfer into hotel and airline partners

Annual fee is quite low at $95 a year + you get a 10% anniversary bonus on points + $50 hotel credit in Chase travel.
