Update: The following only applies to Intra-Asian Flights.
News changes fast…but thankfully the restriction, for the time being, has been lifted on the US-ASIA routes, and is now limited to just intra-Asia awards. Who knows what this means for the future, but we’ve missed a big bullet for the time being.
Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Hainan.
Two of the very best redemption options provided by Alaska miles are premium cabin travel on Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines. The biggest challenge towards finding seats in those cabins is that the bulk of inventory is released last minute. Unfortunately, we’ve just learned of a new policy that Alaska has instated that prohibits last minute bookings ( within 3 days of departure) on Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and Hainan. This not only affects those who are looking to make new bookings, but also those who have bookings and would potentially upgrade to a better cabin…once the inventory opened. So annoying. Hopefully this is a temporary thing, as Alaska is citing “fraud” as the reason, but I have a feeling this may actually be the result of cost cutting…Either way – you’re not using Alaska miles to snag those seats.
