Earlier in the month, the US embassy prohibited its employees from entering 5 different neighborhoods in the Playa Del Carmen area. The reason was an undisclosed security threat. That ban has been lifted in addition to a travel warning for any travel to the Playa Del Carmen region in general for U.S. Citizens. Both the ban and warning were lifted as a result of new security measures being introduced, including metal detectors and increased screening. The State Department does maintain its recommendation to exercise “extreme caution,” and purchase travel insurance.
