Refresher: How to find Japan Airlines award space

We reported yesterday that you can now use Alaska Mileage Plan miles to book Japan Airlines award tickets. This opens up some great opportunities. Have you seen their first class product? DOPE. And I’m pretty sure they’re competing with American for the airline with the most business class products. I digress. This post is about booking award tickets! Here’s a little refresher on how to find Japan Airlines award space.

Step 1: Log in on JAL.com

Step 2 – Once you’re in…Click JAL International Award Ticket

We’re looking for the O – that’s what we can book with Partner miles like Alaska Mileage Plan, AAadvantage, or BA Avios.

Step 3…Always select Japan as your area of departure and roundtrip.

There is a trick to seeing multiple dates and cities and this is the setup.  So if you’re looking for an award from North America to Japan, select the return of the roundtrip to correspond with your travel date to Japan. If you’re looking for a one way from Japan to North America pick any date as the return, it doesn’t really matter.

Your search will only deliver roundtrip avail for Los Angeles. But now we can do a little trick.

Step 4: Change the North American city preference to “All”

After you do this…it will show you availability for all of the routes that JAL flies from Japan to North America and Vice Versa. Pretty sweet!

Now get out there and book some awards! Oh…and you can search for Japan Airlines awards using British Airways too. I made a video walking you through the process of finding partner space. You can view the video tutorial here

I often see JAL F seats when searching BA.com. Usually no more than 1 seat. For instance, I have one ticketed right now for January (Booked 9 months in advance)

Not so much to the point. JL only release First Class awards to partners 2 weeks before departure. This rule is confirmed and fixed, no matter if you let AS check it manually for you. If you are trying to make up a route by calling them, or trying to come up with a stopover plan, then this article may help.

Jnrfalcon – hmmmmm this must be YMMV. I agree inventory opens up greatly two weeks pre-departure, but I’ve booked JAL First Class flights 7 months ago using AA miles, and several tickets since with AA miles. It’ll be interesting to see the Data Points with Alaska and their access, but I haven’t had the same experience. Thanks for the input!
