Amex Offers: Spend $20 get $10 back on Gas ( Shell App)

Super easy way to save $10 on your next fill up if you’re willing to use the app. Check your Amex to see if you’ve been targeted, but I received a Spend $20 get $10 back at Shell when using the app. If you carry an Amex Business Gold this could be especially valuable with the potential 4x bonus category ( remember its the 2 categories where you spend most that activate the 4x).

Here are the 10 American Express Cards that I keep, why we like them, and their current offers

Spend $20 get $10 back at BP/Amoco Mobile App

  • Can only use once, can’t be added to multiple cards
  • Valid in app at Shell US locations

OFFER TERMS

Enrollment limited. Must first add offer to Card and then use same Card to redeem. Only U.S.-issued American Express® Cards are eligible. Limit 1 enrolled Card per Card Member across all American Express offer channels. Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to that Card. Offer valid for automotive gas purchases made in-app with a qualifying digital wallet via the Shell App at participating Shell stations in the US. A “qualifying digital wallet” means any digital wallet accepted for payment within the Shell App. Participating stations can be found by using the Station Locator within the app. For your transaction to be eligible, you must first add your enrolled Card as the default card or payment method to a digital wallet accepted within the Shell App. The same digital wallet must then be selected for payment in-app. Qualifying spend must be met after any Fuel Rewards® savings are applied to an in-app purchase. Excludes any payments not made via the Shell App, such as transactions made online or by phone or payments made at the pump. Not valid on car washes, garage or mechanic services, or purchases made in convenience stores or at restaurants at Shell stations. Excludes locations outside of the US. Offer is non-transferable. Limit of 1 statement credit per Card Member. You may not receive the statement credit if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as qualifying for the offer. For example, you may not receive the statement credit if (a) the merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services; or (b) the merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers); or (c) you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account. Purchases may fall outside of the offer period in some cases due to a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction (for example, the purchase date for online orders may be the shipping date). Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 8/16/2022, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Note that American Express may not receive information about your qualifying purchase from merchant until all items/services from your qualifying purchase have been shipped/provided by merchant. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned/cancelled. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your purchase as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the statement credit. Limit 1 enrolled Card per American Express Card online account. The enrolled Card account must be active, not past due, canceled, or have a returned payment outstanding to receive the statement credit. Any benefit earned from this offer is in addition to the rewards (i.e. Membership Rewards or cash back) earned as part of your existing Card benefits, but your ability to earn spend-based rewards for the purchase will be based on the amount after any statement credit or other discount is applied. Amex Offers are dynamic and personalized, so the offers you see may change. For questions regarding your Card Account, please call the number on the back of your Card. By adding an offer to a Card, you agree that American Express may send you communications about the offer. POID: K3NZ:0001

Historically 80k is a very, very good offer and hit in both 2022 and 2023. In 2021, we saw the offer hit an all time high of 100k. Who knows if that will ever come back.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® is exceptional starter card and offers transferrable Ultimate Rewards, and pairs well with other Chase cards.

If you carry this card alongside Chase’s cashback cards like the Chase Freedom Flex®  and Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the business versions: Ink Business Cash® , Ink Business Unlimited® you can combine the points into Preferred account and transfer into hotel and airline partners

Annual fee is quite low at $95 a year + you get a 10% anniversary bonus on points + $50 hotel credit in Chase travel.

Miles, the terms that have me scratching my head a little bit are: “Offer valid for automotive gas purchases made in-app with a qualifying digital wallet via the Shell App….” The verbiage makes it sound like you first need to load the AmEx card with the offer into “a qualifying digital wallet” (like Google Pay) and then use that digital wallet — not the card by itself — to pay for the gas purchase. Do you or do any of your readers know if my reading of the terms is correct or can you just pay with the app, selecting the AmEx card where you’ve loaded the offer? Hope this makes sense because I’m a bit confused….

How do you justify so many amex cards with their fees? Do you have any post where you discuss why you keep each card and how it makes sense for you to pay their fees?

Too many strings attached to save $10 one time. For me anyway. (This offer has been available for quite awhile as far as I know).

  • Kay February 23, 2022

Hey MIles, I have this offer on my card as well. Is it difficult to use the app for this? Never tried. Appreciate any details on using this app for a tech challenged person like me. Thanks!

I was able to complete this savings…50% on gas, I will take it, knowing it is only $10 maximum

Umm, I think you misread, or didn’t type what you meant to type.

As I read it you have to use the app AND it has to be in person (not online), not OR in person.

I was pretty excited about this when it hit my card, until I saw that I’d have to load yet another app and give up my data to them.

But it’s a great deal for those who already use it.

    • Miles February 19, 2021

You’re totally right…I misread but have amended now. Thank you!
