Buy Virgin Atlantic Miles

Virgin Atlantic is a running an all time high 70% bonus on their miles. Let’s dig into the deal, whether it’s right for you, some attractive redemptions, and how pricing could vary depending on how many miles you buy. Through 12/31/22, you can buy up to 200k Virgin Atlantic Miles with up to a 70% bonus.

As I always say…don’t buy miles speculatively. Make sure you’ve crunched the numbers and optimally have a redemption in mind.

Terms:

  • Must be purchased by 12/31/22
  • Up to a 70% bonus when you purchase a max of 200k miles
  • Miles are good for 3 years

Why would you buy miles?

Personally I think using Virgin Miles on partners like ANA are by far the best usage. I’ve redeemed on Virgin itself, but the taxes and fees are terribly hard to swallow. For instance, I paid nearly $600 in surcharges for fly their new A350 from NYC to London. Here’s a few redemption options that could be attractive depending on your situation.

ANA award chart:

These numbers are roundtrip. Roundtrip in business to east or west coast runs you 95k and 90k, respectively. ANA is in the process of solely operating it’s newest business class cabin on the route, The Room. It looks absolutely epic.

UK account holder ( see below for more information )

  • 1.3 cents a point
    • Roundtrip Biz to Japan from East Coast = $1235 + surcharges
    • Roundtrip First to Japan from East Coast = $1560

US Account holders

  • 1.8 cents a point
    • R/T Biz Japan East Coast = $1710
    • R/T First Japan East Coast = $2160

Also…Virgin announced earlier this week that you can use miles on KLM and Air France.

Delta

You can use Virgin miles to fly Delta for cheaper than you could on Delta. Keep an eye out of their newest Delta One suite, but often you can find it for just 50k points from the States to Europe.

In fact, I flew Delta One from London to Altanta for just 47,500 miles and 120 pounds.

Virgin itself

While you’ll pay hefty taxes and fees. It is quite a cool way to fly, and rates can be quite attractive. You’ll often see 47.5k redemption levels between the East Coast and London and plenty of award space. The biggest downside is that these flights have a massive surcharge attached to them in either direction.

How many miles can I buy?

Max is 200k + a 70% bonus.

Is this the best pricing?

I believe 70% is the biggest bonus we’ve ever seen…we have seen 50% in the past as an FYI.

Overall

It’s a very good deal, but only purchase if you have a booking you know you want to make, and keep in mind that Virgin Atlantic adds a lot of surcharges to their own awards.

I’ve been getting AF flights on VS for a while, and they are usually around 7K cheaper than flying blue. One of the better deals is flying intra EU on KLM or AF using VS, only 8K for any award J flight 600 miles or less.

Is the rate always better for UK account? can you get a UK account without living there?
