I was actually on the phone with two different reps this morning and both confirmed  that the bonus would be extended through the 3rd quarter! But, it looks like the 4th quarter will be included as well! This is monster news!!!

*According to ViewFromTheWing’s, Gary Leff:

Wholesale membership clubs will be a part of Chase Freedom 5x category Now til 2017!

  1. Costco
  2. Sam’s
  3. Bj’s
  4. perhaps others…worth calling to double check

As far as 3rd quarter…the activation is tomorrow and it will apply to

  1. Restaurants
  2. Wholesale Clubs

Don’t forget to activate your category bonuses for 2nd quarter!

Chase Freedom Category Bonsu

How can this be leveraged to max out your Free 5x category bonuses?

  • Category bonuses apply to the first $1500 you spend on qualified categories
My spending on Groceries for the last 12 months
My spending on Groceries for the last 12 months
  • As you can see here – I’ve spent $505.90 – so I’m almost $1000 under the what I could spend to max the category bonus

So what will I do?

  • Gift cards, gift cards, gift cards

    • I often don’t spend $1500 in a quarter on categories so I’m potentially missing out on some great bonuses
    • I buy visa gift cards instead
      • As you can see, this quarter I’m about a $1000 shy
      • So I’ll buy $1000 of visa gift cards…
        • These can be used wherever visa is accepted, not just grocery stores
        • An easy way to extend the 5x categories to other purchases
    • With Costco I can buy gift cards for lots of retailers as well as Costco gift cards for future purchases

We keep an up to date spreadsheet that lists the best ever offers: You can find that spreadsheet here.

Historically 80k is a very, very good offer and hit in both 2022 and 2023. In 2021, we saw the offer hit an all time high of 100k. Who knows if that will ever come back.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® is exceptional starter card and offers transferrable Ultimate Rewards, and pairs well with other Chase cards.

If you carry this card alongside Chase’s cashback cards like the Chase Freedom Flex®  and Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the business versions: Ink Business Cash® , Ink Business Unlimited® you can combine the points into Preferred account and transfer into hotel and airline partners

Annual fee is quite low at $95 a year + you get a 10% anniversary bonus on points + $50 hotel credit in Chase travel.
