American Airlines is notorious for being uber stingy on releasing premium cabin award space across the pond. Unlike airlines like Cathay and Lufthansa you can’t even count on a rhyme or reason to how they release…it’s feast or famine. Right now, AA has released loads of space from their Dallas Hub, DFW, to London, LHR in First Class. Decent space in business. Either way, if you’re looking to get to Europe from the States this creates a very good opportunity to fly flat in one of the best products to fly across the Atlantic.

Here’s their First Class – 85k points across the pond.

I haven’t flown it, but based on the reviews out there, it’s a larger product, more private, but with very much the same service as you’d get in business. You would have access to first class lounges which is a nice touch in London as AA flies out of Terminal 3 – new Cathay First Lounge is open.

The great thing is that it avoids the taxes and fees assessed vs flying BA. 85k + $5.60

Here you can see the calendar for DFW to LHR

Here’s a couple month wide looks at business – just 57.5k each way.

Their 77W business class is one of the very best ways to fly from the USA to Europe and vice versa. You can read our review here.

You can also redeem Alaska Miles for American’s First Class at the same rate 85K. If you’re short – they’re currently selling miles for 2.1 cents.

Better to book it with Etihad Guest for just 55000 Etihad miles for business class or 67,500 Etihad Miles for AA First. 🙂

It’s actually a bit less private. Quite a bit more comfortable though.

Yes, very rare to have AA metal in F or J awards. I flew AA 777 ORD-LHR a few years back when it was 62K for F. Older seats, but comfortable. At 85 it’s still an OK F award – especially if you can get it LHR to the US west coast. And, as you point out, the LHR T3 CX F lounge is now open, and in 2018 the AA First lounge in T3 is undergoing a refurbishment to make it a Flagship Lounge, and finally there is the new Qantas Lounge to visit in T3. But readers seem to vote CX as the overall best lounge. Hopefully the new Flagship upgrade will put AA on top. We’ll see. Happy travels!
