Regent Hong Kong opening

I’m in the midst of planning a trip through Asia toward the end of May and Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities. I’d love to even squeeze a single day in the city amidst the trip, and when I began looking at potential stay options…I got a little excited. To my surprise, I stumbled upon the Regent Hong Kong as a booking option! Sorry… not a single day with award availability across the entire calendar, but it’s been closed for a few years, and the idea that award space could be loaded for my trip got me… excited to say the least.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Regent Hong Kong is the new rebranding of the venerable Intercontinental Hong Kong which I’ve had the great pleasure of staying at a couple of times.  The location is incredible with the lobby bar framing multi story views of the Victoria Harbour. Back in the day, it used to be an incredible use of IHG points at just 50k a night ( you could use an IHG Rewards Select free night certificate even ). Sadly those days are long gone.

Sure the rooms were definitely dated, but I thought the location was superb. It closed for renovations just before the pandemic hit, and I’ve been waiting patiently to see what the new hotel would look like, and how award rates would land.

After doing some digging, it appears that the Regent Hong Kong will open in March, speculatively March 17th, but I haven’t seen an official press release. It looks like Loyalty Lobby is seeing the same thing.

Here’s a look at the new rooms…they look nice, but my goodness they are nearly $1000 a night. Those are Peninsula prices…which is nearly across the street and the most famed hotel in all of Hong Kong, and well, it’s a Peninsula.

And then what it looks like for points…it looks this way into 2024

It’s great to see the hotel actually available for booking and it makes me quite curious as to how award pricing will fair once it’s loaded into the calendar. Odds are we are looking at 100k a night, but who knows, maybe we get lucky, and some dates fall in the 50k to 70k range.

I was planning on staying at both the Regent and the Rosewood this fall. However, if the Regent wants to charge $1000/night, there is no way I will stay there. I’ve stayed at this hotel while it was still the Intercontinental many times so I know what the rooms are like. Even though the entire hotel has been thoroughly remodeled, it is not worth it at the prices they are asking. I’d rather stay at the Ritz Carlton or Penninsula at those prices. The Regent is a class below the Ritz Carlton, Peninsula, and Rosewood.
