I fly to Europe quite often. A couple of years ago my flight was canceled completely, rescheduled for a day later. Ultimately it was the best thing because I got $500 in compensation, and my rescheduled flight was booked into full fare J – I earned a lot of AA EQMs that flight. The reason I got compensation was – According to EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers are entitled to receive up to €600 (£532) in compensation when their flight lands at their destination more than three hours late.

You can totally file your own claim. This is something that is written about here. It requires writing a letter, contacting your airline, etc. I just wanted it done, without all the hassle, and contacted flight-delayed.com – I have no financial relationship with them at all – it’s just worked for me.

What is Flight-Delayed.com?

The nuts and bolts is that they get you compensation for your delayed flights. They don’t charge unless they win, and if they do…they collect 25%. My experience was SUPER simple and took literally 10-15 minutes, collectively, to do everything needed.

I completed the initial steps while in line for security – that’s how quick it was. I then received this letter

I then filled out a Power of Attorney Form and received the following email:

I have to say…I wasn’t the most optimistic, but there isn’t much to lose. No upfront money, and they collect their 25% only when they win.

THEN BAM BAM BAM BAM – I got €600 for my delayed flight!

Now of course, I ended up only netting €450 ( or roughly $500), but that is incred!!!!

I’ve used them since on Economy tickets as well.

Same exact procedure and the money that my received as compensation was in excess of our purchase price. Yep, a delay ended up resulting in us getting paid to fly.

I’m in the midst of filing another claim on a flight that my girlfriend was flying and was canceled.

Moral of the story.

Know that you have a claim if your flight was delayed for reasons that are covered under EU law. I know, I run a travel blogging site and I should just file the claim myself, and I will at some point do it, but at the same time, it’s one less thing to have to worry about and the professionals have gotten the job done for me in the past.  Also…airlines will do everything they possibly can to avoid paying you…i.e. “extraordinary circumstances” prevent us from…

Have you had any success with EasyJet? Flight cancellation.

    • Miles June 8, 2018

Jeff – I haven’t actually. BA and Aer Lingus on several tickets

  • Jeffrey June 2, 2018

Sil there isn’t anything like this in the US, as you said it’s up to the airline’s discretion. The rule also doesn’t apply when flying from the US to Europe on a US flagged carrier, so if you had a six hour delay flying to Europe on Delta for example you’re out of luck.

      Figures. Thanks for the info!!

  • Sil June 1, 2018

Is there any real stateside equivalent or is it predominantly just “at the airline’s discretion” followed by rigamarole that ultimately goes nowhere?

  • BOS Flyer June 1, 2018

Yup. And my $1411 check from EI for an Aer Lingus BOS-DUB cancellation back in ’17 arrived this week. Thank you EC261/2004.
