I recently needed to book a last minute domestic flight and wanted to utilize Singapore’s program to do so. Not only are their miles accessible via Citi Thank You, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Amex Membership Rewards, but the miles expire after 3 years, and you don’t pay a close-in booking fee like you do on United ( $75 ). There are a couple of ways to extend their life, but activity in the account doesn’t extend them so it’s always my preference to use them first.
Search
I initially searched for availability on United ( their calendar view is great ). Singapore’s search engine now allows partner booking; however I tend to find it cumbersome and slow. I found space on United, and went to book on Singapore. Nothing.
I double checked space on Aeroplan and Expertflyer and the space was there, and I that’s when I thought I’d just fire up the app and see if I didn’t have a better experience.
The app’s search is clean, fast, and quickly populated the United space I was looking for; however, while it showed the correct pricing during search ( 12.5k ), check out was a different story and would only price it as a return ( 25k )
I’ll make the app a go-to in the future
I ended up phoning in to book, but it cost me a solid 30 mins – phone fees were waived. I’ll be looking to utilize Singapore miles for some intra-South America flights, and I’m hoping that the little glitch intra-app is fixed. It was a quicker and smoother process than the website.
