25k AA miles lured me over to Sprint a few years ago. While the service isn’t always the best, I’ve only paid $50 a month for unlimited data and free international data + text. That’s hard to beat. The problem is the international plan, while attractive in name, is terribly slow. It’s fine when I need to FaceTime audio, send imessages, etc…but, if you need to load maps, send a picture, incessantly check instagram – you’re going to wait.

Enter…Sprint’s international high speed data

Up until recently, I was unaware that Sprint offered an international high speed data plan that was competitive in price. I know a few people who use Verizon and pay $10 a day to have full service when roaming, and while that can add up fast, I would sign up on occasion.

Sprint has a $25 a week plan. Here’s how you sign up

Your phone is already enabled with an international plan in over 100 countries, and I figured I’d need to call and add the high speed plan. Wrong. It’s way more simple.

When you land you’ll receive a text similar to this:

If you click on the link you’ll be taken here:

You’ll have one of two options: compare these rates to Verizon. For the week…under $4 a day.

  • $5 a day
  • $25 for 7 days

You’ll receive a confirmation text notifying you that you’re on high speed. You’ll also receive a text when it expires. If you want it for more days, or another week, simply rinse and repeat.

I can tell you that while in the UK and Iceland the service has been better than in the States. Super fast, reliable, and I’ve been able to feed my Tik Tok addiction with speed and fervor. Happy roaming!

I’ll stick with Google Fi. It just works. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sprint but Google Fi is just so easy in most countries.

Please note that in Japan you have two not well known options with Sprint. For $5/month (yes month) you can unlimited roaming 4G LTE, voice calls and texting. You need to set this up with your account via customer service call or chat.

Reports are that 4G LTE data alone is free in Japan with no plan but this will not include calls which are $3.99/minute without a plan.

This is all because Sprint is majority owned by SoftBank.

It’s a pity Sprint’s data service is so poor domestically. I tried it for a while but had to go back to Verizon.

You had me until you said Sprint. Their slogan these days is basically “We’re not as bad as we used to be.”
