Hyatt and MGM Rewards partnership ending

I just received the following email and here is the gist of it:

  • Partnership ends 9/30/23
  • If you match by 7/14/23
    • MGM status until 1/31/24
    • Hyatt Status until 2/29/24
  • Reservations will be honored through 9/30/23 – after that you won’t be able to earn points/tier nights in the partner
We are writing to inform our MGM Rewards Members that the strategic relationship between MGM Rewards and World of Hyatt is ending on September 30, 2023.
MGM Rewards members who have tier matched into World of Hyatt between March 1, 2023, and July 14, 2023, will retain their World of Hyatt tier status until February 29, 2024. After February 29, 2024, MGM Rewards members must qualify for World of Hyatt elite status in accordance with World of Hyatt program terms and conditions.
World of Hyatt members who have tier matched into MGM Rewards between February 1, 2023, and July 14, 2023 will retain their MGM Rewards tier status until January 31, 2024. After January 31, 2024, World of Hyatt members must achieve or maintain the applicable MGM Rewards tier in accordance with the MGM Rewards program terms to be entitled to any such related benefits.
Hyatt hotels will honor all existing reservations booked through Hyatt channels (e.g., Hyatt.com, Hyatt Global Care Center, or the World of Hyatt mobile application). For eligible stays at Hyatt hotels with a checkout date prior to or on September 30, 2023, MGM Rewards members will still be able to elect to earn MGM Rewards Tier Credits for such stays. However, MGM Rewards members will no longer be able to elect to earn MGM Rewards Tier Credits at Hyatt hotels for stays with a check-out date after September 30, 2023.
MGM Resorts will honor all existing reservations at MGM Resorts destinations in Las Vegas booked through Hyatt channels (e.g., Hyatt.com, Hyatt Global Care Center, or the World of Hyatt mobile application). For eligible stays at MGM Resorts destinations with a checkout date prior to or on September 30, 2023, World of Hyatt members will still be able to earn World of Hyatt points and World of Hyatt Tier-Qualifying Night credits for such stays. However, World of Hyatt members will no longer be eligible to earn World of Hyatt points or World of Hyatt Tier-Qualifying Night credits for stays with a check-out date after September 30, 2023.
Through our relationship we have enjoyed watching our members embrace the benefits of both programs. We recognize our guests’ and members’ desire for strategic relationships that enrich their travel experiences, and will continue to evolve our programs to best care for that need.

How to Status match – this ends July 14th

Hyatt and MGM struck a partnership all the way back in 2013. August of that year, reciprocal elite status was granted to members of each program. Why was this so great? It opened the door to a merry-go-round of elite status since the programs continue to run on different calendars. This means that you can keep rematching from one to another.

In 2022 MGM has rebranded their MLife program to MGM Rewards and luckily they kept the status match in tact. It’s time to match your Hyatt status to MGM since the MGM status should have fallen off while Hyatt status runs until the end of Feb.

Let me explain how this works and the MGM Rewards Gold sweet spot for waived resorts fees.

*Note that some people are reporting that the link is broken and they’ve had to manually call in to match.

  • Pearl to Discoverist
  • Gold, Platinum, Noir to Explorist

I mentioned that the Programs run on different calendars

  • MGM Rewards status you earned in 2022 will drop off on 1/31/23
  • The World of Hyatt status you earned in 2022 will expire 2/28/23
  •  This leaves a gap whereby MGM status expires and Hyatt is in tact.

This gap in time facilitates the opportunity to do something really cool – you can use your Hyatt status to match to MGM from Feb 1st to Feb 28th. It may be possible to match between Jan 1st and Jan 31st, but I always do it once it’s fully fallen off.

Then, on March 1st, if your Hyatt status has lapsed, you could match your MGM status to Hyatt status. In fact, you could do this earlier than March 1st, but in the past I always wait just in case there is a glitch ( like I mentioned I do with MGM )  and it doesn’t recognize the match for the next elite status year.

a black and red chart

Matching could equal No Resort Fees at MGM properties

Here’s a look at the benefits of each tier – you’ll notice that Gold status includes resort fees being waived ( the $100 tier achievement isn’t included if you’re matched ) and you can hit Gold status with an Explorist match.

Now with resort fees being waived…it’s even more valuable for Hyatt members planning a trip to Vegas.

Things to keep in mind

  • you must book direct and via MGM
    • This is better anyways since their rates are far better

When you Match Hyatt to MGM you will see this process

Start with Sapphire Status

You can see that I have been dropped down to the lowest MGM Rewards status. At the time of matching I held Hyatt Globalist status, but that will drop off come March 1st so I’ll need to match back to get Explorist.

That’s a wrap! Lemme know if you have any questions,

but use those links to match and follow the time schedule and you’re good to go!

FWIW, the above link to match my Globalist to Mlife didn’t work, I kept getting the error message others have reported.

Decided to go about it from the Hyatt page. Once logged in scroll way down to ‘curated relationships’ and click on MGM. Then scroll down to ‘Mlife rewards’ and click on learn more. Then click ‘opt in’, and you’ll get logged into Mlife and matched. At least, it worked for me and I created my Mlife account about 10 minutes ago.

    G’luck.

Matching from the Hyatt end worked for me as well – thanks!

    • Sho'nuff February 6, 2022

Good Lord that was ridiculous to find out how to do this. Thanks for your suggestion. One added note to save people time, you want to click Loyalty Program at the top once you’re logged in and then select Program Overview. Then your post.

    Miles,

FYI. I waited on hold about 45 minutes to get an MLife Agent. She had to manually upgrade my account. I go through this merry go round every year as I’m a Hyatt Globalist. She said “this link never works”. She had to do some stuff and then she had to go call someone else while I waited on hold another 20 minutes. But in the end, she upgraded both me and my wife again for another year.

    Painful calling in.

      Thank you for sharing!

uggggh so sorry you had to go through this – i’ll put a note in the article about it. Thank you for the data point!

The site must be flooded with people. It’s down. It’s not working for me.

  • J. January 25, 2022

My M Life Gold expires 1/31/22. I am looking to match to Hyatt Explorist before 1/31, then match back to MGM Rewards after 2/1. Then after 3/1 match back Hyatt. Is there anything that would prevent me from doing this?

Getting an error trying to match M Life Gold to Hyatt online…

    • Miles January 25, 2022

Hey J – looks like Mike experience something that many others have been for a few years now and that’s a periodic error on the MLife page that doesn’t make it easy to match. Call into MLlife and have them manually link it to Hyatt. Then when you relink Hyatt to MLife make sure you aren’t signed into your MLife account when you match back from Hyatt, should work fine then.

      • J. January 26, 2022

Strangely I was able to match online today! I guess 45 minutes saved 🙂

        • S January 28, 2022

I’m in the same boat as you are. To clarify, have you already rematched Hyatt > MGM or you’re waiting until 2/1 to be able to do that? I wasn’t sure in your comment whether you were talking about MGM > Hyatt or Hyatt > MGM.
