Fly First. Lie-flat. AA’s 777-200 is the BEST way to fly to Hawaii

If you’re headed to Hawaii it’s probably because you’re looking for some much needed Rest and Relaxation. Maybe it’s your honeymoon, babymoon, OR you just won the lottery and you’re OVER THE MOON. Whatever the reason, you deserve to fly like your head’s been fitted for a crown, right? American Airlines is flying a 777-200 from Dallas to Honolulu and THAT is the plane you want to choose if you want THE BEST way to fly to Hawaii.

The 777-200 is an internationally configured plane, and has a very nice business class. I flew it from London to Chicago last year and FULLY ENJOYED IT.

Business class is marketed as First Class on this route and features reverse herringbone and private seats. If you’re flying with a partner I’d recommend the center seats. Alone…take the window.

8 hours is too long to sit in a recliner. Lie-flat is WAY better. Look at flights AA123 and AA5. 2nd choice would be the 767-300. Still Lie-flat…but not nearly as nice.

If you’re booking coach…I’d definitely go with the 777-200 as it has a much better economy cabin. One fitted with tvs, etc.

The 777-200 starts being widely available in July. I’d argue this is THE BEST WAY TO FLY TO HAWAII.

Yes, Hawaiian Airlines new Business/First class product looks VERY nice, but this product offers ALL AISLE access and lie-flat delight.

You can tell the cabin is retrofit when the seating is 1-2-1. This means lie-flat baby!

On the 772 with the 1 2 1 configuration from Dallas to Honolulu, are some of the seats a rear facing seat?

    • Miles April 21, 2018

yes there is a chance some will be. ultimately it depends on the 772 that they fly on the route, but if it’s fitted with Zodiac seats then some face backwards ( starting with row 1 )

Is that photo with the lie-flat seats of the Premium Economy seats or the 1st Class seats? From the seat map of the plane when booking, it would seem to be the Premium Economy because those are the only type that have 4 seats in the center. It looks like if you consider the forward facing & rear facing seats as a row, that would be 4. Am I right?
And the 2nd photo is of regular coach seats?
I have tickets for this flight this summer & trying to decide if I should upgrade my tickets to Premium Economy or to 1st Class.

If you’re seeing 4 across on the 772 it’s business class ( classified as 1st on the hawaii route) in a 1-2-1 configuration. Would be a terrific way to fly there. thanks for reading!

I found first class round trip ATL DFW HNL in September in first on 767-300 for $1572. Booked with City Prestige and TYP at 1.6 cents/point. I don’t think one could find any award space to Hawaii without extreme luck and flexibility (which most of us don’t have).

  • Billy May 9, 2017

Why is AA the best? Quite a few carriers offer lie-flats to Hawaii from the mainland now.

  • Jeff May 8, 2017

I would argue that Delta’s A330 to Atlanta and Minneapolis would be comparable.

  • Christian May 8, 2017

$1,000 round trip is a steep price for a lot of us, which is why we use miles to enjoy flights we otherwise couldn’t take. The only problem is that there are only 7 days available at saver levels for 2 people through the end of the year. A bit of flexibility required is one thing, but one day per month on average is pretty miserable.

    • Miles May 8, 2017

Christian – the avail at Saaver is miserable and $1k r/t is definitely steep…especially for coach. My intention of the post was to give a heads up of the aircraft servicing the route not to push it as a deal – as it certainly isn’t. Thanks for the readership Christian!
