The Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ is the flagship business card within the Chase portfolio and it has an annual fee to match, $795.  It’s chock full of credits and benefits, that if used to their potential, easily offset the annual fee. If not…well, you may be better suited with a lower fee card like the Chase Ink Business Preferred® that offers a lot of bang with a much lower annual fee, $95. Let’s take a look.

Earn Rates

1x Everywhere

The Chase Sapphire Reserve®  earns 1x on every single purchase, but earns increased earn rates on select categories:

4x Hotels and Airfare booked direct

As long as you book direct with the airline or hotel, you’ll trigger 4x points. This is a big deal on airlines like British Airways, which is a transfer partner, since they charge high taxes and fees even when you book with points. I’d earn 4x points on those fees which is great!

Chase Travel℠ earns 8x

When you book travel via the travel portal you will earn at the following rate

  • 8x across the board

a screenshot of a website

$300 Annual Travel Credit

This an annual travel credit that is issued per anniversary year is credited toward any travel purchase you make on the card. This differs from other card issuers who stipulate that purchases must be in a portal. The Sapphire Reserve  does not. Here is how Chase defines travel

Merchants in the travel category include airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages

Chase offers some of the richest points in the business with a great list of both domestic and international partners. With partners like Hyatt, United, Southwest, Marriott, and IHG I believe they have some of the easiest to redeem points.

When the  Chase Sapphire Reserve® first hit the market in 2016 it had a 100k offer, but the highest in recent years has been 80k after $4k spend in 3 months.

We keep an up to date spreadsheet that lists what the highest offers: You can find that spreadsheet here.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The new Chase Sapphire Reserve®  comes with a bevy of benefits, travel credits, and increased earn rates. It also comes with a new $795 annual fee, a litany of credits, 4x on hotels and airfare booked direct, 3x dining, lounge access with 2 guests

If you carry this card alongside Chase’s cashback cards like the Chase Freedom Flex® and Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the business versions: Ink Business Cash , Ink Business Unlimited you can combine the points into Preferred account and transfer into hotel and airline partners.

Personally, I think the Chase Sapphire Preferred® may offer more value for the annual fee, and if you want the super premium benefits, take a look at the Capital One Venture X to pair with it.

Lounge Access – Chase Sapphire Lounge® by The Club + Priority Pass

Access

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve, J.P. Morgan Reserve and The Ritz-CarltonTM Credit Card primary cardmembers and authorized users have lounge access with their complimentary Priority PassTM membership.
  • Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve cardmembers may bring up to two guests per visit for free, and additional guests for $27.
    • There’s no additional charge for children under two.
    • Ritz-Carlton cardmembers may bring unlimited guests at no charge.
  • Access is based on lounge capacity

    • Hong Kong International (HKG) Coming Soon
    • San Diego International (SAN)
    • Phoenix ( PHX )
    • Las Vegas ( LAS )
    • Los Angeles ( LAX ) Coming Soon

Overall

The card can make a lot of sense if you are effective at using the list of credits and benefits; however, if your organic spending habits aren’t aligned, you may find yourself scrambling to offset the annual fee. Personally, I’m much more interested in the business iteration of this card.

When it says annual credit is that calendar year or from when you get the card? I was planning up upgrading from my flex in July (might wait now if their is a bigger SUB expected), but would I have $300 to use on Stubhub between July and December then that resets in January to another $300?

I don’t think you’d need to be a new subscriber just pay with that card. No idea yet, but rumor is it’s supposed be quite high

So it will be $795 for the new card, but if you upgrade a preferred or a freedom card it will be $550 and the new benefits will update in Octoberish. Would that mean you’d get the new benefits for a smaller fee for the first year?

Hey Janine – So if you get the card before 6/23/25 you’d have the existing benefits, and the 1.5c redemption in chase travel until the new benefits will go into effect on 10/25/25. Whatever points you’d earned up to that date would be redeemable at the 1.5c level through 10/26/27, but any points earned after the 10/25/25 date would be subject to PointsBoost redemption terms.

So do I downgrade me CSR to CSP now, and then apply for the new CSR after 6/23?

    • Miles June 18, 2025

That should be possible, but i’d probably downgrade to a freedom card with no fee. It can take up to 30 days for that to change internally as well. Not really a whole lot of reason to have CSP and CSR unless you already hold the CSP

I currently have both Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum. Between the 2, CSR is a better fit for me with dining earning. Now that both cards are increasing annual fees, one has to go. I’m thinking AMEX. Am I wrong?

    • Miles June 18, 2025

I think you can make a strong argument in either direction depending on which credits are most valuable to you over the course of the year. If you’re able to erase the annual fees with minimal effort via those credits, that’s the card I’d stick with. You could always downgrade your Amex to a Green or pick up a blue business plus to keep those points alive

I downgraded my CSR in attempt to get the CSP SUB, but I missed the deadline. Only have Chase Unlimited right now – would it be best to sign up ASAP under the old AF? I don’t have an urgent use for all of the new perks so can wait until they kick in in October. Do you think they’ll have an updated SUB from the current 60k miles?

    • Miles June 18, 2025

The rumor is we are going to have a big offer – not sure what that means tho. When the CSR first debuted nearly 10 years ago it was 100k. If I had to bet, my guess is it will be that or higher, but I have no inside info on the matter, just my hunch

    Overall
“If you’re looking for value, it’s going to come from…” ?

    • Miles June 17, 2025

yikes, thanks for pointing that out. hadn’t hit update on my end – should show fully now.

  • Harsh June 10, 2025

    What’s Edit?

    • Miles June 10, 2025
