There are two styles of Alaska planes you can fly – those that have always been a part of Alaska ( Boeings ) and those that were once Virgin America ( Airbus ). I wrote a guide as to how you can use the seat map to figure this out, but I recently flew one of their Boeings from LA to Boston and once onboard quickly downloaded the Gogo App. Why?
If you’re flying on the old Virgin planes, you’ll have seats with IFE built in. If you’re flying on an Alaska plane they would sell ( or hand out to elites and 1st class passengers ) tablets to watch entertainment on. Both of which were fairly limited in selection.
Now…they utilize the Gogo app to broadcast fee entertainment to your device. The speed was fast, entertainment selection much broader, and unlink other airlines that have the functionality built into their own applications, Alaska does not. You NEED the Gogo app and won’t be able to download it after you’re in the air.
