Don’t be fooled by the announcement on April 1st that American has done away with 24 hour holds. In fact, there are many people who are still able to hold flights. Anecdotally I’d say that most are Elite, and I know as a Platinum I get offered a hold on every ticket I go to book, but some people’s accounts haven’t been integrated into the no hold policy yet. So YMMV, but you may be able to benefit from this without status. Sooooo with that news:

There’s a little work around that you can employ to get more than a 24 hour hold…FREE

Use Time, specifically Central Time Zone
- American uses Central Time Zone for their booking system – so factor that into your reservation.
Example: If you put a hold on a ticket at 11:59pm Tuesday, June 14th it will hold until 11:59pm Wednesday, June 15th. A mere 24 hours.
BUT IF YOU BOOK ONE MINUTE LATER!
If you hold a ticket at 12:00am on Wednesday, June 15th it will hold until 11:59pm Thurs, June 16th
An Additional 24 hours of hold for 60 seconds. 48 Total hours. Not too shabby
Also you can see from the screen shot below that they have introduced paid holds as well…Depending on how great the fare is and how long you need to decide…
To conclude: The #MMMonday Tip is…wait until midnight central time to place your reservation on hold . You’ll get 48 hours. TADA!

Historically 80k is a very, very good offer and hit in both 2022 and 2023. In 2021, we saw the offer hit an all time high of 100k. Who knows if that will ever come back.
