Amex airline fee credits have refreshed
It’s a new calendar year which means all of your Amex airline fee credits have refreshed. I have 3 cards that provide a total of $500 in incidental airline fee credits so I need to be strategic in my selection. Looking at my future travel habits I’ll make a decision as to where I think the fees could be best used. I carry elite status in both AA and Alaska, but this year, I’m changing it up, and selecting AA as my airline for fee credits. Why? Amex has tightened their classification of incidental fees and it has changed my future strategy.
Amex changes how incidental fees are credited
Last year Amex eliminated the ability to purchase under $50 tickets on Alaska and get reimbursements, but also the ability to purchase gift cards for future travel on AA, Delta, and Southwest. Anecdotally, it seems some people are still getting reimbursement, but it can’t be counted on.
I live in LA and fly to Indianapolis with my pet all the time, and with the erosion of Alaska benefits on AA flights, I’ll no longer be seeking to credit my direct AA flight to IND on AA. So…that means I’ll have an AA purchased and operated flight, which means I can use the fee credits on AA. In fact, I hate to admit it, but I’ll easily hit the fee credits. So…I changed my airline
