This is an interesting deal that may be applicable even if you’re using points. British Airways passes on very high fuel surcharges and taxes on award tickets…we’re talking $700 to $1000 one way. If you’re looking to fly a few people on British Airways and originate in the US, you could hit the $1200 on those charges alone.

Here are the 10 American Express Cards that I keep and links to their current offers and why we have them in our wallet and recommend your consideration.

Details: British Airways Spend $1200 get $180

  • Ends 06/23/24
  • Get 30000 Membership Rewards or $300 statement credits

We keep an up to date spreadsheet that lists the best ever offers: You can find that spreadsheet here.

Historically 80k is a very, very good offer and hit in both 2022 and 2023. In 2021, we saw the offer hit an all time high of 100k. Who knows if that will ever come back.

Main Cast:

Cards that earn flexible points and should be used on the bulk of your purchases.

Supporting Cast:

Cards that earn fixed points in the currency of the airline/hotel and can not be transferred at attractive rates. These cards yield benefits that make it worth keeping, but not necessarily worth putting a lot of your everyday spend on.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® is exceptional starter card and offers transferrable Ultimate Rewards, and pairs well with other Chase cards.

If you carry this card alongside Chase’s cashback cards like the Chase Freedom Flex®  and Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the business versions: Ink Business Cash® , Ink Business Unlimited® you can combine the points into Preferred account and transfer into hotel and airline partners

Annual fee is quite low at $95 a year + you get a 10% anniversary bonus on points + $50 hotel credit in Chase travel.

I tried stacking it with AARP $200 business class bonus NY-Rome. Waiting to see if the $180 hits. Don’t see why it would not.

Has anyone tried this with a Avios flight? Trying to book flights for 2 from the US to Edinburgh then London back to the US.

I can lower the Avios amount to pay almost exactly $2,000 cash.

Problem is that I can’t book a multi-city flight in the Avios redemption site so I’d have to book the flights separately and the return flight obviously wouldn’t originate in the US but I’d be charged in USD.
