American Express Statement credits

Every month, quarter, 6 months, and end of year certain Amex cards have credits that expire, and if you’re like me, a reminder is helpful so you don’t waste them. Both December is the most important month of the year for Amex since its cards have monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and yearly credits.  They all completely reset in January so take a look down below so you don’t forget to use them!

Cards in this post:

In addition to monthly credits, don’t forget all the quarterly, semi-annual, and annual credits across multiple cards – those semi annual credits reset in January and July.  Several hundred dollars of are due to expire!

Here’s a quick little guide to make sure you are aware of all the Amex statement credits you can use.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

Every month The Platinum Card® from American Express has an Uber cash credit (enrollment required) of up to $15 except for December which is up to $35! Also, remember that at the end of every quarter you now have Lulu (enrollment required) and Resy (enrollment required) credits that expire.

Amex Platinum also comes with a litany annual credits. The list is very long and note that these are all paid as statement credits and are “up to” the amount listed…meaning if you don’t use the full credit, you don’t get the full statement credit. All of these need enrollment in order to trigger.

For instance, in the past, I’ve used the annual $200 hotel credit on single night stays via Fine Hotels and Resorts. In 2021, I stayed at the Rosewood in Vancouver – gorgeous property. In 2022 I used one at the Hermitage in Nashville and my wife used her credit at the Conrad Nashville, this year I used mine at The Joseph in Nashville ( can you tell we go to Nashville a lot lol ). All of them are stunning properties.

I’d also point out that you can use your annual Digital credit on Hulu and add on HBO Max, Showtime, etc and effectively fold those into your credit. Additionally, WalMart+ comes with Paramount+

150k after $6k spend in 6 months along with 15x worldwide dining ( up to $25k ) was the best we ever have seen publicly through Resy. However, the 150k referral without the dining is pretty hard to beat imo.

We keep an up to date spreadsheet that lists what the highest offers: You can find that spreadsheet here.

American Express® Gold Card

Every single month the American Express® Gold Card has a dining credit of $10, this month is no different. I’ve had success in the past buying gift cards to use in the future, but the only catch is using them at valid places: Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Five Guys. The other catch is making sure you’re enrolled.

Amex Gold also has an Uber Cash credit of $10 a month. If you hold both AmEx Platinum and Gold these can stack to earn you $25 a month. Enrollment is required – learn how to do that here

The annual fee on the American Business Platinum Card® is very steep so you want to make sure you take a look at the benefits/credits and confirm you’ll use them every year.

I’ve found that I earn more points from the American Express® Business Gold , but I’m able to take advantage of  a lot of statement credits, lounge access, and 35% points back on your select airline travel booked via the Amex Travel Portal. The new hotel credits, Hilton credits, and incidental airline credit outweigh the fee for me, but this will be a card that I’ll have to keep an eye on since the fee is so high.

A lot of people overlook the Amex Green card as it falls in the shadow of its premium siblings the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum. But this is a bad mammajamma earning 3x on travel, transit, dining, and has a very liberal interpretation of travel compared to other Amex cards.

Travel with the Amex Green card is defined as the following:

  • Flights
  • Hotels
  • Tours
  • Vacation Rentals
  • Rideshares like Uber and Lyft
  • Busses
  • Taxi
  • Subways and Metros
  • Tolls
  • Earn 40,000 Membership Rewards(R) Points after you spend $3,000 on purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership.
  • Earn 3X Membership Rewards(R)
    • points on travel including airfare, hotels, cruises, tours, car rentals, campgrounds, and vacation rentals.
    • transit purchases including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways.
    • eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the US.
  • Up to $199 CLEAR Plus Credit:
    • Receive up to $199 per calendar year in statement credits when you pay for your CLEAR Plus membership (subject to auto-renewal) with the American Express(R) Green Card.

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

The biggest statement credit to keep an eye on with this card is the annual Delta Stays credit where you can get $100 back if you book a stay via Delta.com. These are available on prepaid stays ( however some bookings can be made as refundable so beware ) – so if you have this card I’d keep an eye on those prices as you could get an easy statement credit on your stay…just keep in mind you won’t be earning any elite credits, etc.

The biggest reason to get this, aside from SkyClub access which you can get from the Amex Platinum, is the potential MQM boost via spend + the domestic companion certificate that includes domestic 1st class.

I think most people are attracted to this card because of the SkyClub access when traveling on Delta and access will change come 2/1/25. Make sure you look at the Amex Application Rules here

However, you can get that via the Amex Platinum card which I’d argue is a much better card dollar for dollar.

The biggest reason I’d take a closer look at this card is

You purchase at least 2 first class tickets every year for more than $650 a piece. This card comes with a domestic companion certificate that you can use on first class. You’d still need to pay taxes on that extra ticket, but that could pretty easily recoup the annual fee right there.

  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card Members receive 15 Visits per Medallion® Year to the Delta Sky Club® when flying Delta and can unlock an unlimited number of Visits after spending $75,000 in purchases on your Card in a calendar year. Plus, you’ll receive four One-Time Guest Passes each Medallion Year so you can share the experience with family and friends when traveling Delta together.
  • Enjoy complimentary access to The Centurion® Lounge when you book a Delta flight with your Reserve Card.
  • Receive $2,500 Medallion® Qualification Dollars with MQD Headstart each Medallion Qualification Year and earn $1 MQD for each $10 in purchases on your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card with MQD Boost to get closer to Status next Medallion Year.
  • Enjoy a Companion Certificate on a Delta First, Delta Comfort, or Delta Main round-trip flight to select destinations each year after renewal of your Card. The Companion Certificate requires payment of government-imposed taxes and fees of between $22 and $250 (for itineraries with up to four flight segments). Baggage charges and other restrictions apply. Delta Basic experiences are not eligible for this benefit.
  • $240 Resy Credit: When you use your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card for eligible purchases with U.S. Resy restaurants, you can earn up to $20 each month in statement credits. Enrollment required.
  • $120 Rideshare Credit: Earn up to $10 back in statement credits each month after you use your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card to pay for U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers. Enrollment required.

The main focus of supporting cards is to yield benefits on hotels and airlines you frequent the most or prefer.

If you’re taking a Delta flight with someone once a year, you could probably offset the annual fee with the main cabin companion certificate. Add in some checked bags, 15% off award flights, and there is a pathway to extracting more value than the annual fee.

Honestly, after the recent Delta program changes, this card is hard to justify paying the annual fee on an ongoing basis

  • Enjoy a Companion Certificate each year after renewal of your Delta Platinum Business Card. The Companion Certificate requires payment of government-imposed taxes and fees of between $22 and $250 (for itineraries with up to four flight segments). Baggage charges and other restrictions apply. Delta Basic experiences are not eligible for this benefit.
  • Earn 1.5X miles* on eligible transit and U.S. shipping purchases, plus single eligible purchases of $5,000 or more. Terms and miles cap apply. *If your purchase qualifies for a category that has a higher mileage accelerator, only the higher accelerator will apply.
  • Get closer to elevated Status next Medallion® Year with MQD Headstart and MQD Boost: receive $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars each Medallion Qualification Year and earn $1 MQD for each $20 of purchases with your Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card Members save 15% when using miles to book Award Travel on Delta flights through delta.com and the Fly Delta app. Discount not applicable to partner-operated flights or to taxes and fees.

Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card

The biggest reason Delta loyalists would want either the business or personal SkyMiles Reserve card is Delta SkyClub access so if you can make use of the Resy and Rideshare credits you’re getting a ton of the annual fee back in statement credits. Add in the companion first class ticket you get on an annual basis (  on account anniversary ) and you’re doing a great job at offsetting a high annual fee.

  • Monthly Credits
    • $240 Resy Credit,
      • earn up to $20 per month on eligible Resy purchases using your enrolled Card.
    • Up to $10 back Rideshare Credit
      • each month after using your enrolled Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card for U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers.
  • Annual Credit
    • Delta Stays statement credit of up to $250
      •  after using your Delta Reserve Business American Express Card to book prepaid hotels or vacation rentals through Delta Stays on delta.com.
    • Receive a Companion Certificate on First Class, Delta Comfort+®, or Main Cabin domestic, Caribbean, or Central American roundtrip flights each year after renewal of your Card.
      • The Companion Ticket requires payment of government-imposed taxes and fees of no more than $80 for roundtrip domestic flights and no more than $250 for roundtrip international flights (both for itineraries with up to four flight segments). Most people give this card a second look because of the Delta SkyClub + Centurion Lounge access when flying Delta. Personally, at this price point, the The Platinum Card® from American Express is a harder hitting card dollar for dollar even though the annual fee is more…you get more.

Where this card can actually make sense is in the free domestic roundtrip on account renewal. These are good for first class tickets, so if you’re taking at least one trip a year where you’d either want to, or normally, pay for 2 first class domestic flights, you could recoup the fee pretty easily.

Add in the 15% off Delta award flights, priority boarding, free first checked bag, etc and you’ll be ahead on the annual fee.

  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business Members receive 15 Visits each Medallion® Year to the Delta Sky Club® and can unlock Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access after spending $75,000 in purchases on your Card in a calendar year.
  • Earn 3 miles per dollar on eligible Delta purchases.
  • Get closer to elevated Status next Medallion® Year with MQD Headstart and MQD Boost: receive $2,500 Medallion® Qualification Dollars each Medallion Qualification Year and earn $1 MQD for each $10 on purchases with your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card.
  • Enjoy a Companion Certificate on a Delta First, Delta Comfort, or Delta Main domestic, Caribbean, or Central American round-trip flight each year after renewal of your Card. The Companion Certificate requires payment of government-imposed taxes and fees of between $22 and $250 (for itineraries with up to four flight segments). Baggage charges and other restrictions apply.  Delta Basic experiences are not eligible for this benefit.

  • As a benefit of Card Membership, you can check your first bag free on Delta flights, saving up to $70 on a round-trip Delta flight per person. For a group of four that’s a potential savings of up to $280 per round-trip flight.
  • When you purchase a Delta flight with your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business Card, you will receive complimentary access to The Centurion® Lounge or Escape Lounge.
  • Receive Zone 5 Priority Boarding on Delta flights; board early, stow your carry-on bag and settle in sooner.
